  • The Cleveland Browns were listed as a top-five contender to win Super Bowl 54 during the offseason
  • Instead, they went 6-10 and were never a factor as far as playoff contention was concerned
  • Books are listing the Browns at opening odds of +3300 to win Super Bowl 55

The Cleveland Browns were listed at average odds of +666 to win Super Bowl 54 at one point during last offseason.

In retrospect, perhaps it should have been taken for the sign of the beast, and not as a sign of hope for the Browns.

As far as the 2019 NFL season is concerned, the Browns were mostly hopeless. You could suggest that they were bedevilled from the outset.

Listed at one point as a top-five Super Bowl contender, Cleveland was more hype than hope, finishing a dismal 6-10.

Books aren’t buying into Browns’ futures when it comes to Super Bowl 55 odds. They put Cleveland as its 17th betting choice to win the big game next season at odds of +3300.

The Browns are one of four NFL teams that have never played in a Super Bowl game. The Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans are the others. Cleveland is the only NFL city that has never appeared in or played host to a Super Bowl.

Cleveland won its most recent NFL championship in 1964, two seasons prior to the introduction of the Super Bowl.

Browns Were Smoke And Mirrors

Cleveland was 2-5-1 midway through the 2018 season when head coach Hue Jackson was fired. Under interim coach Gregg Williams, they went 5-3 in the second half, and flirted with Wild Card playoff contention. Among AFC teams, only the Baltimore Ravens (6-2) posted a better second half.

A pair of rookies, quarterback Baker Mayfield and running back Nick Chubb, displayed tremendous promise. A Browns team that went 1-15 in 2016 and 0-16 in 2017 was suddenly showing potential.

A blockbuster trade to acquire All-Pro wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr from the New York Giants ramped up the enthusiasm surrounding the Browns another notch. They were at odds of plus-800 to win the Super Bowl the day after the deal.

They hit their shortest odds of +666 on May 1. By the opening of the season, the Browns were still a strong betting choice at +736.

Kitchens Couldn’t Stand Heat

Oddly, instead of staying with the successful Williams, the Browns opted to name offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens as their new head coach.

It proved to be a terrible decision. Kitchens was clearly out of his element as an NFL head coach. The Browns were drubbed at home 43-13 by the Tennessee Titans in their season and home opener.

They were 2-6 at midseason. The Browns finished the season on a three-game losing skid.

Sportsbooks 86 Browns’ Super Bowl 55 Chances

Books peg the Browns as the seventh betting choice among AFC teams for Super Bowl 55. In fact, Cleveland is the third betting choice among AFC North teams. Both the Baltimore Ravens (+800) and Pittsburgh Steelers (+1600) are given better chances of winning Super Bowl 55.

Kitchens is out and Kevin Stefanski is Cleveland’s eighth head coach since 2010. The front office was also restructured, including new GM Andrew Berry. Stefanski and Berry are the fifth coach/GM combo under the team’s current ownership.

The Browns haven’t won a playoff game since 1994. In the midst of yet another transition, that streak won’t be ending next season.

Cleveland won’t be going to Super Bowl 55.
