Two sputtering clubs duke it out on Sunday with the 1-and-4 Carolina Panthers squaring off with the LA Rams, who are 2-and-3. The Panthers had seen enough with head coach Matt Rhule and gave him his pink slip, leading to speculation on who their next permanent head coach will be. For now, Steve Wilks takes over on an interim basis.

The Rams have problems of their own in their Super Bowl defense, as they’ve sagged to a below .500 record, which they’ve never done this late in the season under Sean McVay. They’re ten-point favorites in this contest.

Kickoff at SoFi Stadium at Inglewood, California is set for 4:05 pm ET. It’s expected to be a mix of sun and clouds all game. Winds will be around 25 miles per hour. FOX is carrying the broadcast in the United States.

Rams Offense Sputtering

The Los Angeles Rams offense hasn’t been operating how we’ve been accustomed to under Sean McVay. In their two victories, they have 31 and 20 points, but in their three defeats, they’ve scored a total of 29 points. Cooper Kupp has still been incredible in racking up yardage, but new Ram Allen Robinson hasn’t had the impact they’d hoped and the running game has sagged.

The Carolina offense hasn’t been a ton better, with the exception of star running back Christian McCaffrey, leading to rumors on who his potential next team might be. Baker Mayfield likely won’t be playing, so they’ll turn to P.J. Walker, who has actually won his only two career starts. That comes with a caveat, however, as he’s thrown for two TDs but a whopping eight interceptions. He’s in effect their fourth-string QB (Mayfield, Sam Darnold and Matt Corral out).

According to Pro Football Focus, the Panthers are the 22nd-ranked team through five weeks (28th on offense, 18th on defense). As for the Rams, they are 16th (26th on offense, 5th on D).

Panthers vs Rams Injury Report

Both squads have lengthy injury reports. Panthers WR Laviska Shenault Jr. is out. As is cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver. Other DB’s Jaycee Horn and Donte Jackson are questionable, with QB Mayfield doubtful.

For the Rams, Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp and Tyler Higbee are all questionable, but head coach Sean McVay expects them to play. RB Cam Akers and Center Brian Allen won’t be suiting up for this contest.

70% of the handle has been placed for the Panthers to cover, with 53% of bets on the over in Panthers vs Rams NFL betting trends, with a whopping 92% of wagers on LA to win on the moneyline.

Panthers vs Rams Prediction

The Panthers have dropped four of their first five games, with remarkably them playing four at home through five weeks (they did win one at home). That was with their starting QB at the helm. With a banged-up secondary, it could be just what the doctor ordered for Matthew Stafford and co.

You have to feel for interim head coach Steve Wilks with a depleted roster and a quarterback who hasn’t shown he can take care of the football in P.J. Walker.

This should be a game where we see the Rams prove why they won the Super Bowl last year. However, in four of their five games, they’ve gone under the listed 41.5 total.

The Pick:

  • Rams -10 (-110); 1 unit to win 0.91 units
  • Under 41.5 (-112) 1 unit to win 0.89 units

2022 record: 7-6; +0.65 units
