There is rampant debate as to who the second quarterback taken in the 2020 NFL Draft will be. The most recent mock drafts have the two neck-in-neck as FOX Sports projected Herbert going ahead of Tagovailoa while the USA Today and Sports Illustrated had it the other way around.
Now that we’ve made our way through free agency – at least the first wave of it – it’s become clear that the teams looking at quarterbacks are the Miami Dolphins at No. 5 and the Los Angeles Chargers at No. 6. It’s quite likely that whoever the Dolphins don’t pick, the Chargers take with the No. 6 pick in the draft.
My feeling has always been that Tagovailoa is going to go before Herbert simply based on the fact that before his hip injury, he was expected to be the top pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Sure, a lot changed as Joe Burrow emerged, Tua hurt his hip and Herbert had a great combine. However, to me, it seems that more teams have Tagovailoa graded higher.
That being the case, I would bet on Herbert going to the Los Angeles Chargers at +175. They need a quarterback of the future, he’s a west coast guy and they could put him in a pretty good position to succeed. They’ll be happy with this pick.
Team to Draft Tua Tagovailoa Odds
Team | Odds |
---|---|
Miami Dolphins | -120 |
Los Angeles Chargers | +350 |
Washington Redskins | +350 |
Detroit Lions | +1000 |
Carolina Panthers | +2000 |
Jacksonville Jaguars | +2000 |
Cincinnati Bengals | +2500 |
Las Vegas Raiders | +2500 |
Indianapolis Colts | +3000 |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers | +4500 |
The team I’m expecting to land Tagovailoa is the Dolphins. I do think that they’ll try to make a run at Joe Burrow by attempting to acquire the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. They have the capital to do it as they have three first-round picks and a pair of second-rounders. However, with Burrow being fine with Cincinnati, I don’t think Miami will get the pick.
That means they’ll have to go to their next option and I do think that guy is Tagovailoa. Not only is he a bit of a value at this point since his stock dropped a bit due to the injury, but I also like the Alabama connection.
We’ve seen that New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has an affinity for Alabama players as his good friend Nick Saban is the head coach there. Dolphins’ head coach Brian Flores comes from the Belichick coaching tree and could have the same thinking patterns.
Furthermore, the Dolphins have Ryan Fitzpatrick under center still and are still in the midst of a rebuild. There is no pressure on the team to succeed right now, so Tagovailoa came come in and get fully healthy before getting under center. All of these factors should lead the Dolphins to be the team that ends up with Tagovailoa.
