Eagles’ Super Bowl Odds Still +2000 After Brandon Brooks Announces His Season Is Done – Are They Still Worth Betting?

Most NFL teams have just started opening up training facilities and the Philadelphia Eagles have already suffered a big blow.

Pro Bowl RG Brandon Brooks has torn his Achilles and will now miss the season. It’s Brooks’ third achilles tear of his career, as he returned last season after previously tearing his left achilles in January of 2019.

This is a huge loss for the team and unless the odds don’t lengthen, you might not want to bet on their Super Bowl futures.

Brooks Loss a Big One

A lot of casual fans might not think that losing a guard is that big of a deal but let’s add some perspective here. According to the Pro Football Focus, Brooks was the second-ranked guard last season and the fifth-ranked player in the NFL overall. He’s a really important part of their success.

Over his four year career in Philadelphia, the Eagles are 41-23 when he’s played at least 50% of the offensive snaps. He’s rarely injured, but the team is 0-6 when he’s out or plays less than 50% of the snaps –proving how much he drives winning.

When healthy, the Eagles should have one of the top offensive lines in the NFL. Lane Johnson is an excellent tackle, Jason Kelce is one of the best at center, Andre Dillard is a good young player and Brooks was elite.

Where Do They Get Help From?

Backup OG Jack Driscoll was drafted in the fourth round, but it would be surprising to see a rookie step in and start – especially with this COVID affected offseason. The team also could call former tackle Jason Peters as he’s still a free agent.

If the team did go for Peters, they’d probably keep him at tackle and kick-in someone like Dillard, which could solve the problem. The challenge here is that any way you look at it, this unit won’t be as good as they were with Brooks.

Are They Still a Super Bowl Contender?

It’s still really early in the grand scheme of things but this is a big loss. The Eagles have now lost one of the best players in the NFL and will have to survive without him – something that the previous stats show they don’t do a great job of.

Considering the Eagles Super Bowl odds didn’t change, I wouldn’t be interested in betting them. Had they shifted down, it’s possible I’d take a look but keeping them the same doesn’t make sense to me. Brooks was a valuable piece.

Beyond that, I have greater concerns about this team – including at wide receiver, linebacker and in the secondary. There are flaws on this team and now one of their biggest strengths – the offensive line – isn’t the rock that it once was. To me, this is a team that’s in that 8-8 to 10-6 range, not a championship threat.
