If the LA Rams want to catch the Arizona Cardinals atop the NFC West, then Monday is a must-win.

Matthew Stafford and the Rams haven’t been playing their best football lately. Before easily handling the Jaguars in Week 13, LA had lost three in a row. They also dropped their Week 4 meeting with the Cardinals 37-20.

Arizona was able to survive without Kyler Murray, going 2-1 while he was out with an ankle injury. Murray returned last week against the Bears and accounted for four touchdowns.

Kickoff is set for 8:15 pm EST on ESPN at State Farm Stadium

The Cardinals are home favorites on Monday night, favored by 2.5 points, with the total set at 51. Some predictions have the Rams upsetting Kyler Murray and the Cards, and the under hitting.

LA is among the league’s best passing offenses and will be missing Darrell Henderson Jr after he was placed on the Covid list. Both teams are in the upper tier of the league when it comes to pass defense, but they will be challenged.

Van Jefferson’s Rise for LA Rams

Back in Week 10, we expected Van Jefferson to play a role for the Rams in the red zone without Robert Woods.

He didn’t, but it did kick off a stretch of three strong games in a row for the sophomore receiver.

Jefferson has seen 24 targets over the last three games, bringing in 12. That 50/50 line is a little misleading though, as the entire Rams offense was struggling to get in a rhythm against the 49ers and Packers. Jefferson went 6-for-16 in those two games but totaled 54 and 93 yards.

Last week was his second-best game of the season, nabbing six catches on eight targets for 41 yards and a touchdown.

But his best game came in Week 4. Jefferson went a perfect 6-for-6 for 90 yards and a score.

It will be interesting to see how the Cards approach Jefferson a second time. Do they consider him the WR2 now, or does Odell Beckham Jr draw those honors?

Either way an increased target share, Jefferson’s game-breaking ability, and the absence of Henderson give Jefferson ample opportunity to go over 51.5.

  • The Pick: Van Jefferson OVER 51.5 receiving yards (-115); 1 unit

Kyler Murray Makes Cardinals Fly

It’s still up in the air just how much Murray’s ankle injury will hurt his MVP chances.

The Cardinals survived without their dynamic QB and are in good shape with him back and healthy.

In his return, Murray embarrassed the Bears for two touchdowns through the air and two on the ground. He completed 11 of 15 passes for 123 yards. It was as smooth as a return as he could hope for.

But a battered Bears defense is different than an angry Rams one.

LA took out their frustrations on the Jaguars last week, after an embarrassing three week stretch. The offense did them few favors with a ton of short fields, but they surrendered 28, 31 and 36 points in Weeks 9 to 11. But the yardage isn’t that bad.

Aaron Rodgers threw for 307 against them, but LA gave up just 304 combined passing yards in losses to the Titans and 49ers. Turnovers doomed them against Tennessee and San Fran ran all over them.

Kyler Murray threw for 268 the first time around. But after going over the first four weeks of the season, he’s gone hit his projected over just once in the five weeks since.

  • The Pick: Kyler Murray UNDER 264.5 passing yards (-115); 1 unit

The Cardinals have been a dominant team when it comes to scoring first. They’ve nabbed the first touchdown in nine of their last ten and ten of 12 this year. Prior to LA opening the scoring against Jacksonville, they had given up the first TD in three-straight.

But if the Rams want to be taken seriously, they have to start fast on Monday.

Arizona defends tight ends and running backs well. Neither score a ton against the Cards. Both Beckham Jr and Jefferson deserve attention from the Cards, but OBJ is the unknown. He was still a Brown in Week 4, so maybe we see some creativity out of Sean McVay on the opening drive.

Overall for the Cardinals, if you’re giving bettors +120 on DeAndre Hopkins hitting pay dirt, then take it. He’s going to have Jalen Ramsey in his face and he was silent in Week 4, but D-Hop is a constant threat. And with eight TDs through nine games, he’s shown it again in 2021.

  • The Pick: Odell Beckham Jr to score FIRST TD (+1400); 0.5 units
  • The Pick: Odell Beckham Jr (+210), DeAndre Hopkins (+120) to score ANYTIME; 0.5 units each
