Mahomes is Now the Odds-On Favorite in Updated 2021 Super Bowl MVP Odds

Patrick Mahomes has emerged as a big favorite to repeat as Super Bowl MVP.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s odds are -105 to win the award Sunday when his team takes on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

Mahomes was the MVP last year when the Chiefs rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.

Here is a look at the latest odds for the MVP in a game in which the Chiefs are favored by three points.

Mahomes Becomes Bigger Favorite

Mahomes opened as a +110 favorite just moments after leading the Chiefs to a 38-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game. That set up one of the most intriguing Super Bowl matchups ever as Mahomes will face Tom Brady and the Buccaneers.

Not surprisingly, Brady has the best odds of any Tampa Bay player at +200. Mahomes and Brady are the only two significant players whose odds have improved in nearly two weeks.

That Mahomes’ odds have improved to the point where he is now the better than even-money favorite is not a big surprise. After sustaining a concussion in the Chiefs’ win over the Cleveland Browns in a divisional-round playoff game, Mahomes showed he was both healthy and effective against the Bills.

He completed 29 of 38 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

That followed another outstanding regular season for the 25-year-old. He threw for 4,740 yards and 38 touchdowns while being intercepted just six times in 588 passes. He also had a 66.3 completion percentage and averaged 8.1 yards an attempt.

Mahomes has thrived in the postseason during his three years as the Chiefs’ starter, compiling a 6-1 record. He has 2,054 yards passing, 17 touchdown passes and two interceptions in 252 attempts.

And, of course, Mahomes shined in Super Bowl 54 following a rough start as he rallied the Chiefs from a 20-10 deficit with 21 fourth-quarter points.

Kelce, Hill On Radar

The odds of Mahomes’ favorite two targets – tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyreek Hill – are +1400 after opening at +900. They are the third co-choices after the QBs.

Kelce and Hill are the first teammates to exceed 100 yards receiving in back-to-back playoff game. Kelce has 21 receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns in this postseason. Hill has 17 catches for 282 yards.

During the regular season, Kelce set the NFL record for most receiving yards by a tight end with 1,416 on 105 catches. He also caught 11 TD passes.

Hill had 87 receptions for 1,276 yards and 15 TDs.

Don’t Sleep on Fournette

On the Buccaneers’ side, running back Leonard Fournette has the secondb-best odds after Brady, though they has risen to +3000 after opening at +2500.

Fournette has rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns on 48 carries in three games during the playoffs while adding 14 receptions for 102 yards and a score.

Fournette even brings out some humor from Brady.

He has become a bigger part of the Buccaneers’ offense in the postseason, averaging 20.3 touches a game. He averaged 10.2 during the regular season when he was signed Tampa Bay just before the opener after being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars at the end of training camp.

Searching for Value

While Mahomes is understandably the favorite, he does not represent good value at better this even money. Brady also would not provide a big payout at +250.

However, if we are looking for a sleeper, let’s consider Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones.

Yes, has interior lineman has ever captured the honor. However, Jones will be the perhaps the best defensive player on the field as Pro Football Focus has a grade of 90.0 on him, the third best of any interior defender in the NFL after the Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald and Chicago Bears’ Mario Edwards Jr.

While it is difficult for a defensive tackle to put up eye-popping statistics, Jones is still intriguing at odds of +8000.
