Odds on Adrian Peterson’s Next Team After Being Released by Washington – Bears Favored

The Washington Football Club sent him packing on Friday but Adrian Peterson insists that he wants to keep running.

A prop wager debating Peterson’s future in the NFL is listing the Chicago Bears as the +450 favorites to be the next team for the three-time league rushing champion.

Two teams in rebuilding mode, the Jacksonville Jaguars (+500) and Miami Dolphins (+650) are given the next-best odds to be the team that picks up Peterson.

A prominent GM, once explaining the fate of the veteran player, suggesting that in the majority of cases, the last person to know that they’re done is the player himself.

In Peterson’s case, though, he appears to be far from finished. No, he’s not the guy who rambled for 2,097 yards for the Minnesota Vikings in 2012.

Still, his showing with Washington last season suggested that Peterson still has some game in his 35-year-old body. He rushed for 898 yards, good for 19th overall in the NFL. Peterson’s per-carry average of 4.3 yards was his best performance since 2015 (4.5), the last time he led the league in rushing.

Peterson has topped 200 carries in each of the past two seasons. Even as he released Peterson, Washington head coach Ron Rivera acknowledged that the back still has some football left in him.

A Vagabond Existence

If a team does opt to pick up Peterson, he’ll be joining his fifth club in five seasons. He spent the first decade of his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings and was recognized as the NFL’s best running back from the majority of that time.

His desire to keep playing could be personal. Peterson is just 784 yards away from becoming the fifth back in NFL history to go over 15,000 career rushing yards.

However, he’s an old-school back who hasn’t adjusted to the new technology. Teams are seeking out versatile backs who can be a double threat and catch passes out of the backfield.

Over the past four seasons, Peterson made 51 receptions. By comparison, Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints, the prototype of the new-age back, has snared 81 passes in each of his three NFL campaigns.

There Are Fits for Peterson

Seeing the Bears at the top of the list isn’t surprising. Chicago is linked to C that comes on the free market.

That being said, there appear to be much better fits out there for Peterson than the Second City.

First off, he’ll need to be willing to accept a situational role if he wants to continue to carry the ball. And there might not be a better fit for what he can bring than the New England Patriots.

The Pats are the NFL’s version of the Statue of Liberty. Given them your tired, your poor, your malcontents.

Sony Michel is New England’s feature back but he’s broken down frequently during his first two NFL season. The Patriots already suit up a pass-catching sensation in James White.

Peterson could provide the Pats with a veteran back who can grind out yards, protect a lead and wear down a defense. Paired with QB Cam Newton’s elusiveness, it could be an ideal scenario.
