  • Odds are -265 against Tim Tebow’s plan to make a return to the NFL as a tight end
  • The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback worked out at that position recently for the Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Tebow hasn’t played in the NFL since 2012. From 2016-19, he played minor league baseball

Tim Tebow’s latest sporting adventure is tight. He thinks he can make it back to the NFL as a tight end, and Tebow is not alone in that belief.

Urban Meyer, the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, worked out Tebow as a tight end. Tebow was Meyer’s QB in college with the Florida Gators.

Oddsmakers don’t seem to agree that this latest reincarnation of Tebow will be a winning plan. No is the -265 favorite in a prop wager asking whether he will play a game in the NFL during the 2021 season.

The Many Turns of Tebow

The Jaguars recently brought in a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback. Oh, and they also picked up Trevor Lawrence.

Tebow entered the NFL as a two-time national champion and a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback. Drafted 25th overall by the Denver Broncos in 2010, he beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 2011 NFL playoff game.

However, when the Broncos picked up Peyton Manning, Tebow was traded to the New York Jets, and he was out of the NFL a year later.

After failed attempts to gain employment with other teams and even consideration of a notion to play in the CFL, Tebow turned to baseball in 2016, signing with the New York Mets. He spent four seasons in the Mets’ minor-league system.

His best season was in 2018 with AA Binghamton of the Eastern League. Tebow hit. 273 with six home runs. He announced his retirement from baseball in February.

Meyer-Tebow Connection

Meyer wasn’t merely Tebow’s coach, the two men have formed a life-long bond. According to documents unearthed by the Jacksonville Daily Record, Meyer recently bought a home in Jacksonville that’s three doors down from where Tebow lives.

A two-time SEC player of the year at Florida, that it’s Meyer who’s in charge of the Jaguars certainly increases the likelihood of Tebow signing a contract with the team.

Jags Shy of Tight End Depth

According to the team’s depth chart, there certainly isn’t a wealth of talent currently in the Jacksonville tight end room. Journeyman Chris Manhertz is listed as the starter. He’s in his fifth NFL season, and the Jags are his fourth team. Manhertz caught six passes for 52 yards last season.

Beyond him, there’s fifth-round draft pick Luke Farrell of Ohio State, 2020 sixth-round draftee Tyler Davis, James O’Shaughnessy, who’s caught six passes in six NFL seasons, and Ben Ellefson, who caught one pass in 2020.

There does appear to be an opening for a competent tight end. But is that guy really Tebow?

Jesse James, Tyler Eifert, and Trey Burton are among the NFL free agent tight ends still on the market.

Tebow Turned This Down Before

In 2013, Tebow was out of the NFL after being cut by both the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots. At the time, NBC’s Peter King reported that Tebow was offered a contract by an unnamed NFL team if he was willing to change positions.

He declined the offer. After nearly a decade out of football and failing to make the grade in baseball, suddenly a beggar can’t be a chooser.

It Could Happen

Does any athlete get more chances offered to them than Tebow? There’s just one catch – he never follows through by delivering the goods.

He wasn’t able to make it as an NFL QB because he couldn’t throw the ball. His baseball failure was because he couldn’t hit the ball.

Can he catch the ball and block? Those are the two main attributes required to be a successful NFL tight end. Tebow is 33. Is it possible to teach an old dog new tricks?

It won’t be surprising when Meyer opts to tender a contract to Tebow. Just as it won’t be at all shocking when he comes up short of the objective. On the professional playing field, that’s been Tebow’s tale of woe.

Pick: No (-265)
