Tom Brady’s 20-year run with the New England Patriots is over. That leaves the burning question of where arguably the greatest quarterback of all-time will land.

It seems likely Brady will wind up signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Los Angeles Chargers. The Bucs are +125 favorites to land TB12 and the Chargers are the second choice at +150. The Buccaneers opened as a heavier favorite.

Brady, of course, is a proven winner. He led the Patriots to nine Super Bowls, winning six and being named MVP in four.

Furthermore, New England has won 11 consecutive AFC East titles and 16 of the last 17.

Buccaneers on Upswing

The Buccaneers showed improvement last season, Bruce Arians’ first as coach, as they finished 7-9 following back-to-back 5-11 finishes.

However, few quarterbacks than Jameis Winston ever had more highs and lows in one season.

He led the NFL with 5,109 yards passing and threw 33 touchdowns passes. Yet, he was also picked off a league-worst 30 times in becoming the first QB in league history to have both 30 TD passes and interceptions in the same season.

Maybe Winston could replace Brady with the Patriots. Or maybe not.

The Buccaneers have a pair of Pro Bowl wide receivers in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. That would be a welcome sight for Brady following a 2019 season in which Patriots’ wideouts provided almost zero production beyond Julian Edelman.

Chargers Disappointed in ‘19

The Chargers were one of the NFL’s biggest disappointments last season as they finished 5-11 despite being expected to challenge the Kansas City Chiefs’ superiority in the AFC West.

That came on the heels of Los Angeles going 12-4 in 2018 and knocking off the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs

They were hurt by the early season holdout of running back Melvin Gordon, yet quarterback play was also a large part of their demise.

Philip Rivers’ QB rating of 88.5 rating was the third-lowest mark of his 14 seasons as a full-time starter. Furthermore, his 20 interceptions were only one off his career high.

However, if Brady signs with the Chargers, he will have four good enticing targets in wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, tight end Hunter Henry and running back Austin Ekeler.

Gordon is a free agent but, despite the discord last season, says he wants to stay with the Chargers.

Is the End Near?

Of course, there is also the question of just how much Brady has left at 43.

While the Patriots had a 12-4 record last season, they stumbled down the stretch by going 4-4 following an 8-0 start. Then New England got bounced out of the playoffs in the AFC divisional round at home by the Tennessee Titans, their earliest exit in a decade.

Brady threw for 4,057 yards and 24 touchdowns while being intercepted eight times. Yet his 88.0 quarterback rating and 60.8 completion rate were both his lowest since 2013.

Furthermore, Brady completed less than 56% of his passes in six of those last eight games.

However, even at an advanced age, it is hard to ignore Brady’s pedigree as a winner. Thus, it’s worth at least a small play on both the Chargers and Buccaneers to win it all.
