Are These the Cream of the NFL Crop?

There are minus odds on 10 teams to make the playoffs this season. In the AFC, the sportsbook likes the Patriots, Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, and Los Angeles Chargers the best.

Listed as the top NFC contenders are the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, New Orleans Saints, and Philadelphia Eagles.

Eight of those teams were postseason participants in 2018, and right away, that should set off alarm bells for you.

Last season, only five of the 12 playoffs were holdovers from the 2017 postseason. In 2017, just four of 12 teams were repeat playoff performers.

The NFL is all about parity and balance. What that relates to is significant turnover in playoff teams every season.

Lock in the Pats

There’s been one constant in the NFL Playoffs every season going back to 2009, and that’s the New England Patriots. There’s a reason why one sportsbook is listing the Patriots as the minus-800 chalk to do it again in 2019-20. Because they will.

Have you looked at the other teams in the AFC East? Two of them, the New York Jets (Sam Darnold) and Buffalo Bills (Josh Allen), are going with second-year quarterbacks. The Miami Dolphins are breaking in their own sophomore QB in the newly-acquired Josh Rosen.

New England has won 10 straight AFC East titles because the Patriots are a very good football team, but also because all of the other AFC East residents aren’t very good football teams.

You get the sense that a decade from now, Tom Brady will be rolling out to his right in his Rascal scooter and throwing strikes to whatever free agent receiver the team signed that winter.

Count Them In, Too

The Browns? Yeah, the Browns. Look at that lineup. Baker Mayfield at QB. Nick Chubb in the backfield. Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. running pass patterns. Cleveland is going to take the AFC North and win a division title for the first time since 1989 when Bernie Kosar, another Heisman Trophy winner, was under center for the Browns.

The Los Angeles Rams are much like the Patriots. Other than the Seattle Seahawks, LA won’t see much in the way of competition from the NFC West. Put them down for a third straight title.

In the AFC South, the Indianapolis Colts were one of the NFL’s best teams over the second half of the season. Andrew Luck will lead them to a division title and luck will have nothing to do with Indy’s success.

Count These Teams Out

When Carson Wentz suffers his annual debilitating injury, the Philadelphia Eagles won’t have Nick Foles to slot in as his replacement. That will send their season down the tubes.

No first-year coach has ever guided the Packers to the postseason. Not even Vince Lombardi.

Matt LaFleur is the new coach of the Green Bay Packers. No first-year coach has ever guided the Packers to the postseason. Not even Vince Lombardi.

Here’s a bold prediction – count out the Chiefs. They lost their leading rusher in Kareem Hunt after he assaulted a woman last season, and now top receiver Tyreek Hill is also doubtful as he’s investigated for child abuse.

The KC defense is dreadful. If the Chiefs can’t outscore their D, they’re in trouble.

A Sleeper Pick

If you know anything about the Carolina Panthers, it’s that the odds fall in their favor in odd-numbered years. Ron Rivera’s team has won 12 (2013), 15 (2015) and 11 (2017) games the last three odd-numbered years.

If Cam Newton is healthy after off-season shoulder surgery, this is a wildcard team.
