  • The Kansas City Chiefs are +550 favorites in the opening odds for Super Bowl 56
  • Only three NFL teams have gone to at least three consecutive Super Bowls
  • The reigning Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers are +900 to repeat

Is Kansas City going to the Super Bowl again next season? The oddsmakers believe it to be so.

The two-time defending AFC champions and Super Bowl 54 winners are the +550 favorites in the opening Super Bowl odds for 2022.

In Super Bowl history, just three NFL teams have reached the big game three years in succession. The Miami Dolphins played in Super Bowls 6-8. The Buffalo Bills lost four straight Super Bowls from 1990-93.

More recently, the New England Patriots sandwiched wins in Super Bowls 51 and 53 around a Super Bowl 52 loss.

A year ago, KC was the +650 chalk in the opening 2021 Super Bowl betting line.

Trends To Consider

In general, teams don’t become Super Bowl champions out of nowhere. Over the past decade, one  Super Bowl winner played in the big game the year prior to their win. Four others reached the conference championship game. Three more were coming off playoff appearances entering the campaign that they’d win it all.

Just two won the Super Bowl after missing out on postseason play during the previous season. The Philadelphia Eagles (Super Bowl 51) were a true anomaly. They were 7-9 the season before their big-game victory.

The New York Giants also missed the playoffs prior to their Super Bowl 46 triumph. But the Giants were 10-6 and lost out on the postseason via tiebreaker.

Evidently, if you’re going to roll the dice on a longshot, play an NFC East team.

Could Chiefs Do It Again?

Certainly, KC isn’t going anywhere. Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill and Travise Kelce don’t figure to slow down their productivity next season.

However,  you only need to look at New England’s two-decade dominance to realize how difficult it is to reach to the Super Bowl in multiple seasons. Between 2001-2019, the Pats made the playoffs in all but two years.

Yet as dominant as they were, the Patriots endured a nine-year stretch in there when they didn’t win a single title.

NFC Is Wide Open

Three of the best teams in the NFC this season were led by quarterbacks who are nearing the end of the line. Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady and Drew Brees of New Orleans are in their 40s. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers will be 38 next season.

Can Brady and Rodgers repeat their all-world performances in 2021? Will next year ever be the year of the Saints?

Just once since 1998 has the same NFC team gone to consecutive Super Bowls, the Seattle Seahawks in 2013-14.

The Los Angeles Rams were in Super Bowl 53. They had the NFL’s best defense last season, and have already upgraded at QB with the addition of Matthew Stafford.

At +1200, the Rams could prove a tasty play.

Ravens Could Soar

The Buffalo Bills could follow the Kansas City script and go to the Super Bowl the year after losing in the AFC Championship Game. There’s two teams in the AFC North that are also worthy of consideration.

At some point, QB Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens are going to put it all together. He’s got weapons on offense and is supported by the NFL’s #2 defense.

One of four NFL teams that’s never played in the Super Bowl, the Cleveland Browns took a big step forward last season. They’re probably still at least a year away from being a big-game team, but odds of +2200 will be tempting.
