The Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers both endured seasons to forget during the 2020 NFL campaign. Philly stumbled to a 4-11-1 record. Savaged by injury, the 49ers dropped to 6-10 a year after going to the Super Bowl.

Both got their reclamation seasons off to promising Week 1 starts. San Francisco scored 41 points at Detroit in a 41-33 verdict over the Lions. At Atlanta, the Eagles crushed the Falcons 32-6.

Facing each other for the second successive season, the 49ers are a 3-point pick on the road. Last year in San Francisco, the Eagles were 25-20 winners. Philly has won the last two meetings and seven of their last nine games against the Niners.

Line Dancing

Action has proven to be relatively stale on this game in terms of the betting lines. The Niners were 3-point picks in the opening line. San Francisco was given -170 odds in the moneyline to start. The total began at 49 points.

Public bettors are leaning toward the Eagles. In spread betting, 67% of all bets are backing Philly at +3. There’s an even wider discrepancy in the moneyline, where 88% of all wagers are on the Eagles. The public is also leaning heavily toward the under to the tune of 82% of wagers played.

Hurts So Good

A year ago, it was Carson Wentz at quarterback when the Eagles beat the 49ers. This team belongs to Jalen Hurts now and he made Nick Sirianni a winner in his debut as an NFL head coach.

Hurts played the type of game he’ll need to if Philly is to be successful. He stuck with quick, short high-percentage passes. Hurts was 27-of-35 for 364 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. His yards per attempt were just 7.54. He used his feet to stay out of trouble, rushing for 62 yards.

The problem for the Eagles is that the 49ers are hurting at cornerback. Starting left corner Emmanuel Moseley (knee) is doubtful. On the right side, Jason Verrett tore his ACL against Detroit and is done for the year.

That leaves rookie Deommodore Lenoir starting. Eagles rookie wideout DeVonta Smith enjoyed a record-setting debut. The 2020 Heisman Trophy winner caught six passes and went for a TD. No rookie had ever done that in franchise history. Does Sirianni stick with the gameplan that suits Hurts the best, or do they go with a more vertical passing game to take advantage of the San Fran’s ailing secondary?

Stopping The Run

San Francisco seems to be able to put anyone in the backfield and they gain yardage. Minus Raheem Mostert (knee) for the season, rookie Eli Mitchell slotted into the lineup. All he did was run for 104 yards and a TD on 19 carries.

Philadelphia’s defense allowed the Falcons to gain 4.8 yards per carry last week. The Niners averaged 4.7 yards per rush against the Lions.

Injury Report

Is history repeating itself for the 49ers? One week into the season, the ailments are already piling up. The left side of their defensive front — end Arik Armstead (abdominal) and tackle Javon Kinlaw (knee) — are questionable. Weakside linebacker Marcell Harris (oblique) is also questionable.

A hopeful development for the Niners was that Armstead, Kinlaw and Mosley were all full participants in practice on Friday.

Strong safety Rodney McLeod (knee) is out for the Eagles.

Trendspotting

Veteran corner Dre Kirkpatrick was signed by San Francisco. Fellow vet Josh Norman could see plenty of playing time on the corner as well.

The Eagles have won three of four at home over San Francisco. However, the 49ers have won six of the last nine games played at Philly.

Phiadelphia is 8-1 against the spread in the last nine games against San Francisco. The Eagles are also 5-1 ATS over their last six home games.

Best Bet: Philadelphia Eagles +3 (-110).
