The Pittsburgh Steelers expect to have Ben Roethlisberger back in the lineup when they visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football as 5-point underdogs. Sidelined in Pittsburgh’s 16-16 tie with the Detroit Lions in Week 10 after being placed on the team’s COVID list, the Steelers quarterback was activated on Saturday morning.
The Chargers look to rebound after dropping a 27-20 decision to the visiting Minnesota Vikings that marked their third defeat in four outings.

Steelers vs Chargers Line Movement
Sunday night’s matchup marks the first meeting between these two teams since October 2019. The Steelers posted a 24-17 win as 6-point road underdogs in that clash, extending a trend that has seen home favorites lose outright in four straight head-to-head meetings since 2009. While that 2019 clash paid out for sports bettors taking the UNDER in totals betting, matchups between these two teams have tended to be high scoring, with the total reaching 58 or higher in four of their five previous meetings.

Despite the breaking news of Roethlisberger’s imminent return, the Chargers have maintained their momentum at the sportsbooks. Backed by 74% of bets place, Los Angeles steadily gained ground after opening as 4.5-point chalk, briefly improving to -6.5 before settling back on Saturday morning to their current position as 5-point favorites. With the OVER also attracting the majority of bets, the total has also made gains, climbing slightly from 47 to 47.5.
Pittsburgh Steelers Outlook
The Steelers will be hoping that Big Ben’s return will hope them to atone for their sloppy performance in last weekend’s tedious tie with the lowly Lions. With Mason Rudolph stepping in under center in place of Roethlisberger, the Steelers squandered multiple opportunities to put the Lions away, including a pair of drives into the Detroit red zone that produced just six total points. Things got no better in overtime, with Pittsburgh twice turning over the ball on fumbles.
Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisberger will be activated to the team’s 53-man roster after passing the NFL’s required COVID-19 protocols, per @SteelersPRBurt. Roethlisberger will not fly with the team, he will go on his own, but he is on track to play Sunday night.

While Roethlisberger’s return should have a calming influence, injuries remain a concern on defence. The Steelers have been effective at shutting down opponents during their current five-game undefeated streak, allowing just 18.4 points per game. They have been particularly stingy against the pass, allowing 182.5 yards per game and just two total scoring tosses over their past four contests. However, with both linebacker TJ Watt, safety Minkah Fitzgerald, and cornerback all confirmed out, the Steelers’ defensive depth will be tested on Sunday.
Los Angeles Chargers Outlook
One of the hottest teams in the NFL while storming out of the gate on a 4-1 SU run, the Chargers have taken a step back since, losing outright and against the spread in three of their past four outings. LA’s current slide has dumped the team out of the AFC playoff picture. However, the Chargers have remain a solid +160 bet in the NFL divisional odds to rebound, and claim the AFC West title. The team has particularly struggled on home turf, losing two straight to New England and the Vikings, and have now surrendered a worrisome 32 points per game over their past three. Currently ranked dead last in the NFL this season while allowing 55.1 rushing yards per game, the Chargers have also been victimized by 10 total scoring runs over their past five outings.

That places added pressure on quarterback Justin Herbert to produce. The second-year pivot has tossed for at least one score in each of his nine appearances this season, and found the end zone on 10 occasions over the team’s past four home dates. However, the challenge for the Chargers will be getting the ball into Herbert’s hands. Los Angeles has consistently fallen well short in possession time during their recent slide. That is a problem that could be further compounded by growing injury woes that have cast in doubt the status of defensive backs Trey Marshall and Mark Webb Jr., as well as Linval Joseph.
The Pick: Steelers +5 (-110); OVER 47.5 (-110)
