The last pieces of confetti are still hitting the field at Hard Rock stadium in Miami, and oddsmakers are already putting Super Bowl 54 to bed, with an eye on 55.

Not surprisingly, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Super Bowl 2020 champs, are all the rage.

After a dominating playoff run that cemented Patrick Mahomes as the best player in the game, armed with the NFL’s premier playcaller and play designer in Andy Reid, and a bevy of weapons to create a virtually unstoppable machine, it’s no surprise we’re looking at KC at the top of the 2021 Super Bowl odds.

While only two teams have made it to back-to-back Super Bowls in this century (Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots), could the Chiefs be on a dynastic run? Let’s explore.

Patrick Mahomes Makes KC a Contender

So long as the 24-year-old is healthy, the Chiefs will be in the Super Bowl conversation. He is the stock of the Chiefs, and tracking their odds throughout the year shows the rise and fall of the Chiefs depending on their star pivot.

After coming off an AFC Championship loss the season prior, the Chiefs were the betting favorite to win Super Bowl 54 at around +700 odds. They got as low as +617 prior to the season starting, and the Chiefs burst out of the gates. In their 4-0 start, Mahomes’ lowest passing output in a game was 315 yards, and he had thrown 10 TDs to no interceptions. The Chiefs’ Super Bowl odds were the shortest in the entire regular season at that point, at +400.

But after dislocating his kneecap in Week 7 against the Broncos, and the Chiefs getting beaten by the Packers at home, their odds spiked, to a season-high of +1400. After returning from injury, he had an epic 446-yard, three-TD game against the Titans in a loss, but he still looked both compromised and uneasy.

That would be their last loss of the season, and as the 2019 MVPs health improved, so did their odds, right to the Super Bowl, where they were -125 to take it all.

Chiefs in Decent Cap Position

Heading into the offseason, Spotrac lists the Chiefs with $21.3 million in cap space for 2021, which is below the league average of $48.5 million. As with any successful team, how their front office does will play a big factor into next year, and that will involve making some tough decisions to create more financial flexibility.

Among those is Sammy Watkins, who, if cut would free up $14 million. After a dazzling three-TD performance in Week 1, Watkins went radio silent for the rest of the regular season. However, he’s been a terror in the playoffs as teams have focussed on containing both Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. He finished with 98 yards receiving in the Super Bowl.

There is also the issue of free agent defensive end Chris Jones, who has established himself as one of the top interior defenders in the league. Their secondary will also likely not all be back, with Bashaud Breeland, Kendall Fuller and Morris Claiborne all heading into free agency. The Chiefs already learned that they need a decent defense to be legitimate contenders.

Of course, the mega-Mahomes upcoming contract looms over all, with Kelce also coming up soon.

What’s the Best Bet?

To be fair, just a few misplays in the 2019 AFC title game and we could be talking about a possible KC three-peat. That’s how dominant they’ve been since Andy Reid put Mahomes under center. They’re a football match made in heaven.

Believe in this front office to build a complimentary defense, and adding the necessary pieces through the draft, trades and free agency to stay a contender for years to come. We might just be in the midst of a golden Chiefs era, and if they race out of the gates again, that number will continue to shorten, so jump on them now.
