Late-Season Slide Decimated Vikes’ Super Bowl Odds

With just two wins in their final five regular-season outings, Minnesota quickly fell out of contention to win the NFC North. That was reflected on the Vikings Super Bowl odds, which tumbled from their peak at +1400 following Week 12, to a distant +4333 going into Wild Card Weekend.

Injuries also played a role in the Vikings’ late-season slide. The Minnesota offense was hobbled by injuries to receiver Adam Thielen, as well as backs Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison. Thielen missed four games in the second half of the season and struggled to have an impact in his December return, while the absence of Cook and Mattison was particularly felt in the recent loss to the Packers that sealed the team’s fate as the NFC’s No. 6 seed.

With the trio back in action, the Vikings offense showed some pop that had been missing down the stretch. Cook powered the Minnesota attack with 130 total yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Thielen made seven catches for a game-high 129 yards, including a spectacular 43-yard reception in overtime that set up the game winner.

The Minnesota defense also stood tall in the Vikings’ second playoff victory over New Orleans in three years, limiting Drew Brees to just 208 yards passing, one TD, and a pivotal interception that the Vikings would late convert into a touchdown.

Heavy Underdogs vs 49ers

The Vikings still face a tough road in their bid to return to the Super Bowl for the first time in 43 years. In the wake of Sunday’s victory, Minnesota have opened as a 7.5-point road underdog in its Divisional Playoff matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

The 13-3 Niners prepare for their first playoff appearance in six years riding a two-game SU win streak, and trail only the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl odds as +290 second favorites. San Fran’s offense racked second in the NFL this season, scoring 29.9 points per game, but turned in some mixed results during a 5-3 second half that featured a pair of outright losses as favorites on home turf.

The 49ers defense also struggled at times down the stretch, allowing 30 points per game over their final two home dates.

Vikes Are Healthy at Right Time

The Vikings own an historical edge over San Francisco, going 6-2 in eight meetings with the Niners since 1998. Shutting down the 49ers’ vaunted ground game, which has racked up 10 scoring runs over the past six games, will likely be key to Minnesota’s hopes of advancing to the NFC Championship.

However, with the team now putting their injury concerns behind them, and the defense clicking, the Vikings offer intriguing value as a Super Bowl bet.

In the event they are able to get past the 49ers, the Vikings still face a massive challenge. Minnesota has lost six straight to Seattle since 2009, and has posted just three wins in its past 15 visits to Lambeau Field. But if Sunday’s sterling performance is any indication, the Vikings are a team that is peaking at the right time.
