The Green Bay Packers will have their sights set on locking up the top seed in the NFC when they host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football as 13.5-point favorites.

Currently riding a four-game win streak, the Packers can clinch the top seed with a win over Minnesota, combined with a loss by Dallas earlier on Sunday.

The Vikings are on the brink of elimination from postseason contention after falling 30-23 to Los Angeles last weekend that marked their third loss in five outings.

Vikings vs Packers Line Movement

Sunday night’s matchup marks the second and final meeting of the season between these NFC North rivals. The Vikings have tallied outright wins as betting underdogs in two straight dates with Green Bay, capped by a 34-31 home victory in Week 11. Minnesota also sports a 3-2-1 straight up record in their past six visits to Green Bay.

Total points have reached 50 or higher in three straight clashes between these teams, fueling a 3-0 run for the OVER in totals betting.

With the Vikings facing serious injury concerns, the Packers have made massive gains since opening as 6.5-point favorites. The total has plummeted since opening at a lofty 47, dipping to its current position at 42, with 82% of bets backing the UNDER.

Minnesota Vikings Outlook

The Vikings failed to seize the opportunity presented to them last week, when they faced a Rams squad playing on short rest with a lineup depleted by COVID-19. Mustering just one drive longer than 15 yards before halftime, Minnesota spotted the Rams an early double-digit lead from which they would never recover.  Overall, Minnesota has now surrendered at least 28 points on six occasions during a middling 4-4 run.

Minnesota also faces a huge challenge to overcome a nasty rash of injuries that has sidelined a number of key personnel. Most notable among those are quarterback Kirk Cousins, who was added to the team’s COVID list this week. Receiver Adam Thielen is also out after suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

With Cousins on the shelf, the Vikings are expected to turn to Steve Mannion. The journeyman pivot has not seen action since making his last NFL start over two years ago. However, the team should get a lift from the return of Dalvin Cook. The Vikings rusher was forced to miss last week’s loss to LA due to COVID-19, but contributed 86 rushing yards and a key scoring run in Minnesota’s Week 11 win over the Packers.

Green Bay Packers Outlook

While the focus last weekend was on Aaron Rodgers’ successful bid to overtake Brett Favre as the Packers’ all-time leader in TD passes, the real star of Green Bay’s narrow 24-22 win over Cleveland was the team’s defence. The Packers allowed the Browns to rack up 408 total yards of offence, but also steadily frustrated Baker Mayfield.

The Green Bay defence sacked the Cleveland pivot on four occasions, and sealed the win with a timely interception with less than a minute remaining on the clock.

Despite enjoying a four-game win streak, the Packers have consistently struggled to shut down opposing offences, and have now allowed 28.8 points per game over their past five outings. Those woes are not helped by the absence of defensive ends Tyler Lancaster and Kingsley Keke, and cornerback Jaire Alexander, all of who are confirmed out.

Rodgers’ health status also remains a concern. The Packers star did not participate in  Wednesday or Thursday practice after a teammate accidentally stepped on his fractured pinkie toe during last Saturday’s win over Cleveland. However, Rodgers was a full participant on Friday, and is expected to be under center on Sunday night.

The Picks: Packers -13.5 (-110); – 1 unit; OVER 42 (-110) – 1 unit
