Odds as of Apr. 21 from DraftKings

Canes Continue Dominance of Panthers

The Hurricanes will be looking to beat the Panthers for the sixth time in a row when the two teams clash at the BB&T Center on Thursday. Carolina and Florida have both moved past Tampa Bay in the Central Division standings and are tied for first place with 65 points apiece.

Carolina is on a roll right now, posting a 6-1-2 record in its last nine games and winning eight of their last 11 on the road. The Panthers are also playing impressive hockey right now, winning five of their past nine. What’s worth noting, however, is three of those victories came against the lowly Blue jackets.

Oddsmakers have set rivalry game up as a virtual pick’em between two of the NHL’s hottest clubs, but the reality is this has been a one-sided rivalry. Carolina has won five straight games against Florida and have taken 13 of the past 16 meetings dating back to 2017.  The Canes also excel at the BB&T Center, as they’ve won five straight on Florida’s home ice.

Florida has allowed 30-plus shots on goal in three consecutive games, which is going to be an issue facing a confident Carolina offense coming off a 4-1 win over Tampa. The Canes have done a better job keeping the puck out of their net this season, and that defense will be the difference in a rivalry game between two powerhouses.

Pick: Hurricanes ML (-118)

Stars Stay Hot Against Red Wings

Dallas will look to extend its point streak to nine games when they travel to Detroit to face the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday. The Stars have earned four straight victories, which included back-to-back wins over Detroit. The recent surge has propelled the Stars to within one point of a playoff spot in the Central.

Detroit doesn’t have nearly as much to play for at this point of the season, as evidenced by their three straight losses and 4-4-2 record in their last 10. The Red Wings have only managed four goals during the losing streak and have been frustrated by the Stars’ shutdown defense. In Tuesday’s 5-2 victory, Dallas blocked 20 shots.

The Stars should keep rolling in this four-game series when you consider their motivation level and recent success against Detroit. The Stars are 5-1-0 against the Wings this season and have cashed the puckline in three of those victories. Part of that success can be attributed to red-hot rookie Jason Robertson, who has scored in two straight games and is rising in the Calder Trophy odds.

The Stars should win this one by at least two goals when you consider the juxtaposition in the two team’s offenses. Dallas has exploded for 17 goals in the past four games and will be facing the NHL’s 23rd ranked defense, while this struggling Detroit offense will be up against a Stars’ defense allowing only 2.38 goals per game — fifth-best in the league.

Pick: Stars -1.5 (+140)
