Two teams headed in opposite directions square off Friday, with the NHL-leading Bruins up against the Metro cellar-dwelling Blue Jackets. Boston has raced out to a brilliant 7-1-0 start, while Columbus has sagged to 3-5-0.

Boston is the second-highest-scoring team and sixth best in goals allowed. That doesn’t bode well for the Blue Jackets, as they’re sixth worst in goals against per contest. The Bruins are playing for the second straight night, and third in the last four, while Columbus hasn’t competed since Tuesday.

The Bruins currently see themselves as sixth choice in the Stanley Cup odds, while Columbus is nowhere near that, as one of the longest shots. The Bruins are -165 favorites in this contest that features a total of 6.5.

Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm ET at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH with NHL Network providing the broadcast coverage in the States.

Boston Bruins Betting Analysis

The Boston Bruins have been phenomenal at scoring this season, racking up at least four goals in six of eight contests. They rank second in goals per game, led by David Pastrnak, who is tied for the league lead with 15 points. Despite their advanced age, stalwart Patrice Bergeron, and David Krejci, who returned from the Czech league, have eight points.

Boston got a shot in the arm Thursday night as superpest and sparkplug Brad Marchand played for the first time following hip surgery. He picked up right where he left off, with two goals and an assist in the B’s 5-1 victory over Detroit.

Starting goaltender Linus Ullmark did not play Thursday, so he’ll be rested. He’s had an amazing beginning of the year with a 5-0-0 record and a .936 save percentage. The Bruins have been terrific on the penalty kill too, ranking second, killing off 93.3% of penalties. That’s not what Columbus wants to see, as they’re the lone NHL team without a power play goal (in 20 opportunities).

Columbus Blue Jackets Betting Analysis

To say the Blue Jackets haven’t received the goaltending they’d like is a massive understatement. With starting netminder Joonas Korpisalo still unable to play (hip), their tandem of Elvis Merzlikins and Daniil Tarasove has been ghastly. Both have save percentages of .863 and .888 and a combined GAA of 4.13, which is sixth worst in the NHL.

The huge off-season acquisition Johnny Gaudreau has been as advertised, with eight points in eight games, but nobody else has more than five points. Patrik Laine (elbow) missed two weeks, and just came back to play his second game of the year on Tuesday. It’ll just be the third game with the desired top line altogether for the Jackets.

Columbus lost their first three games of the campaign in regulation, but has recovered to win three of five. Still, they’re a very disappointing 3-5-0, which is last in the Metro division.

Bruins vs Blue Jackets Pick

Betting against the Bruins in the early going has been fools gold, with them taking all but one of their first eight games. Five of the seven wins came by at least two goals.

Pick Odds
Columbus Blue Jackets Puckline -190
Over 6.5 Goals -105

However, that lone loss came when they played their third game in four nights (a 7-5 defeat to Ottawa), which is what they’ll be doing again on Friday. Last year, they were also 5-6-0 in the second half of back-to-backs.

In nine of their last eleven meetings in Columbus, either the Jackets won or their kept the game within one goal. It’s likely too tall a task for them to win on the moneyline, but they certainly could take it on the puckline.

Pick: Columbus Blue Jackets Puckline (-190), Over 6.5 goals (-105)
