Flyers vs Capitals Recent History

Wednesday night’s matchup marks the first of four regular-season meetings between these Metropolitan Division rivals. These clubs split four games last season, with the Capitals romping to a 9-2 victory in their most recent date on April 12.

Overall, these clubs have taken turns posting wins over their past six clashes, ending a five-game win streak for the Capitals. Three of their past five contests have ended in a 2-1 score. That low scoring has helped the UNDER payout in five of their past seven matchups.

Philadelphia Flyers Betting Outlook

The Flyers’ fast start to the season has become but a distant memory after the team’s seventh straight loss on Monday night. With their 5-2 defeat at the hands of the visiting Flames, the Flyers have now surrendered a hefty 4.71 goals per game during their current slide, which has featured five losses by multi-goal margins. Things have also gone particularly bad on the road, where Philly has now lost six of seven while scoring two or fewer goals on five occasions.

Goaltender Carter Hart has seen his fast start fizzle. Hart impressed out of the gate, allowing just two goals per game while going 6-0-2 over his first eight outings. However, the 24-year-old has quickly become the goat while losing six straight and amassing a middling save percentage of just .876 over that stretch.

Injuries continue to be a concern, with the list of sidelined players including Cam Atkinson, Sean Couturier, Scott Laughton, James van Riemsdyk, and Travis Konecny. However, Kevin Hayes has continued to power the offense with nine points in nine games, and Owen Tippett has recorded five points in five games.

Washington Capitals Betting Outlook

Things have not gone much better for the Capitals during their current swoon. With Saturday’s 4-0 loss to the Avalanche, the Capitals have now allowed five goals per game during their current 0-3-1 run, and have been limited to one or fewer goals in two of their past three home contests. Indeed, the Washington offense has largely gone MIA since opening the season on a 4-3-0 run, scoring two or fewer goals eight times while losing 10 of their past 13.

Like the Flyers, the Capitals’ depth has been seriously tested since getting slammed by a rash of injuries that has claimed the likes of Tom Wilson, TJ Oshie, Carl Hagelin, and Connor Brown. Complicating matters is the recent pedestrian play of stars Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov, who have combined to score just one total goal over the past six games.

Despite those struggles, there are reasons to be hopeful. The Capitals’ current swoon has not developed due to a lack of effort, with Washington shooters peppering opposing goaltenders with an average of 41.7 shots on goal over the past three games. However, the club must do a better job on special teams after scoring just one power-play goal over their past six contests while surrendering five goals while down a man over their past four outings.

Flyers vs Capitals Prediction

Wednesday’s matchup provides the Capitals with a golden opportunity to finally cash in, as long as they can maintain their recent offensive intensity. However, that success will depend on expected starting goaltender overcoming his recent troubles after allowing 12 total goals over less than seven periods of action in his past three outings.

The Pick: Capitals -1.5 (+110); OVER 6.0 (-110)
