  • The Seattle Kraken pay a visit to the suddenly struggling Colorado Avalanche on Sunday, March 5th
  • In their last two games, the Avalanche have give up 14 total goals an average of 7 per game
  • Seattle are second in the league with 123 road goals so far this season, averaging 3.84 per game

It’s been a brutal couple of games for the defending Stanley Cup champions. Any sense of defensive responsibility has eluded then as they’ve allowed seven goals in each of their last two games, both losses. On Sunday, March 5th, the Avalanche look to get back on track when they host the 2nd year, Seattle Kraken.

Puck drop for this clash between Western Conference clubs battling for playoff positioning is set for 9:00 pm ET from Ball Arena. In Canada, this game will be broadcast on Sportsnet, while Root Sports Northwest and Altitude are carrying the coverage in the United States.

Kraken vs Avalanche Odds

Game Time Team Puck Line Total Moneyline
Sunday, March 5th Seattle Kraken +1.5 (-170) O 6 (+100) +140
9:00 PM Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (+140) U 6 (-130) -170

Opponents have scored more than six goals on their own in each of the Avs last two games. It’s hard to imagine Colorado not clamping down in this one, but with the over/under pegged at 6 goals between the Kraken and Avalanche, you have to consider this game surpassing the total on the betting line.

Additionally, the Kraken offense seems to get their juices flowing on the road more than in the confines of their own home. They’ve scored four or more in three straight games as visitors and own the 3rd best road scoring offense in the NHL.

Kraken Looking To Lock Down Playoff Spot in 2nd Season

Following Vegas as the next NHL expansion team led to unreasonable expectations for the Kraken. All the Golden Knights did was go all the way to the Stanley Cup final in their inaugural season as a franchise.

While they didn’t come anywhere near a playoff spot last season, the Kraken are 3rd in the Pacific Division this year and a favorite in the NHL playoff odds this campaign with a quarter of the season left.

Displaying tremendous goal scoring prowess on the road, the Kraken are a very impressive 22-10 covering the spread as the visiting team. Other than Jared McCann who leads the team with 30 markers, no player has hit the 20-goal mark this season, but they have 12 players who have scored 10 or more.

Balanced scoring is one of the main reasons for the Kraken’s success this campaign as well as the stellar play of Matty Beniers, the favorite in the Calder Trophy odds. He leads all contenders for the trophy in goals and points this season.

Injuries Taking Toll on Avalanche

No team has had the injury bug take as big a toll on them as the defending Stanley Cup champ this year. It’s not only the number of man games lost, but it seems as though all of their top players have gone down and missed significant time at one point or another.

Injuries to Avalanche Scoring Leaders From Last Year

Player Games Missed This Year Percentage of Games Missed
Mikko Rantanen 0 0%
Nathan MacKinnon 11 18.3%
Cale Makar 13 21.7%
Gabriel Landeskog 60 100%
Devon Toews 2 3.3%
Valeri Nichushkin 29 48.3%

Most concerning of all the players listed above is the status of Cale Makar who just returned to the lineup from concussion protocol. His lack of action has cost him in the Norris Trophy odds, but it’s the trophy that is awarded on the ice in June that the Avs most need him for.

The reigning Conn Smythe trophy winner saw 22:27 of ice time in the Avs 7-3 loss to the Stars on Saturday.

With so many offensive players missing action this season, the Avalanche have been hitting the under much more consistently than the over, especially when playing at night. They have hit the under in 65.3% of their 49 night games so far this year, almost two out of every three games.

Kraken vs Avalanche Pick and Prediction

Recent trends point to a bet on the underdogs in this one, but you have to think the Avs will be steamed after back-to-back pathetic defensive performances. Coach Jared Bednar will be determined to make sure his squad doesn’t allow another barrage of goals.

Kraken vs Avalanche Same-Game Parlay Picks

Pick Odds
Colorado Avalanche Moneyline -170
Under 6 Goals -130
PARLAY ODDS  +181

Prior to their baffling defensive showing in their last two games, Colorado had allowed just two goals combined in their previous three matchups. For a team that’s consistently been amongst the top three in the Stanley Cup odds this year, they really can’t afford a slip up and a 3rd consecutive defeat.

Our prediction in the Sunday NHL odds is that Colorado displays the form that won them the championship last year and shut down the Kraken at home with a resounding victory.

Pick: Colorado Avalanche Moneyline (-170)
