Through 16 games, both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins have had their fair share of struggles. The Leafs dropped four games in a row last month, but find themselves second in the Atlantic Division with 19 points. Their counterparts are second worst in the Metro Division (15 points), as they had a recent seven-game skid. The Pens seem to have that in the rearview mirror, going 2-0-1 in the last three, including a victory in Toronto last Friday.

Toronto has really not fared well in Pittsburgh, losing their last three by a combined score of 18-to-4, but still are -115 road favorites. Read on for Maple Leafs vs Penguins analysis.

Toronto is the fifth choice in the Stanley Cup odds at +1300. Pittsburgh isn’t far behind at +1600. The Leafs are slight -115 favorites in this contest that features a total of 6.5 goals.

Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm ET at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA with AT&T Sportsnet carrying the coverage in the United States and TSN providing it for those in the Toronto region in Canada.

Toronto Maple Leafs Betting Analysis

Last season, the Toronto Maple Leafs scored goals in droves, ranking second in the league with 3.80 goals per game. This year, however, has been a different story, as they’re down to 23rd in the NHL, with 2.81 goals per contest. In just two of 16 games, they have scored four or more markers.

Toronto has been very efficient keeping pucks out of their own net, as they’re eighth best in the league, which is especially impressive considering their top two goalies in Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov have missed time with injuries. Erik Kallgren, who started the season in the AHL, hasn’t been phenomenal, but has kept the team in games, as they erased a two-goal deficit to beat Vancouver last Saturday.

Toronto might get their goalies back soon from injury, but they’re being cautious with it being so early in the campaign. Their core four forwards Mitch Marner, John Tavares, Auston Matthews and William Nylander are at or just shy of being point-a-game players, but secondary scoring has been lacking.

Pittsburgh Penguins Betting Analysis

The Pittsburgh Penguins have to be thrilled to finally be back at the friendly confines of the PPG Paints Arena. This season, they’ve been really good at home, going 3-1-1. On the road, however, they have been 3-5-2, which resulted in five of their losses in a disastrous seven-game winless skid (0-6-1).

The Pens have been the mirror image of Toronto, as they’re 24th in goals against, but are eighth in goals per game. In each of the last three games, Pittsburgh has scored four goals, including a 4-2 victory in Toronto last Friday.

The extremely weird stat is goal support for their two goalies Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith. The latter is getting 2.50 goal support per game (six contests), yet his goaltending tandem mate Jarry is getting 4.22 goals of support in nine outings.

Pittsburgh has won five of their last seven overall games against the Leafs, and twelve of their last 16 on home ice.

Maple Leafs vs Penguins Pick

The Maple Leafs are favored in this one, but they struggle mightily whenever they head to Pittsburgh, being outscored 18-to-4 in the last three iterations. With the Pens better at home to begin with, selecting them with slightly more favorable odds is appealing.
