Caps and Sabres Will Find Twine

The Buffalo Sabres will look to snap a three-game losing streak when they visit Washington to face the Capitals on Friday. Buffalo has been limited to just two goals and 41 shots in their two most recent outings against the Islanders.

While the Sabres are struggling offensively, these are two teams that usually play high-scoring affairs. Each of the prior two meetings featured six goals, and the “over” has cashed in five of the last seven. The Islanders are one of the best defensive teams in the NHL, and the Sabres are averaging three goals per game vs other opponents.

The Sabres offense has a great chance to get back on track against a Washington defense allowing the fifth-most amount of goals in the league. The Capitals’ offense, meanwhile, is one of the NHL’s best and should feast on the Sabres’ struggling goalie tandem of Linus Ullmark and Carter Hutton.

Oddsmakers have set a high total for this game, but it’s warranted when you consider the lack of defensive structure for both clubs. With neither team being strong defensively and both boasting top-five power-play units, the “over” is a good play here.

Pick: Over 6.5 (-103)

Kings vs Coyotes Will Be Goalie Battle

The Los Angeles Kings will go for a third straight win when they travel to Arizona to face the Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Thursday. This has low-scoring game written all over it considering how well both goalies are playing. Coyotes’ netminder Darcy Kuemper owns a .919 save percentage and has allowed just two goals in his last two starts, while Petersen owns a stellar .926 save percentage on the season.

The “under” has cashed in six of the last seven meetings between these clubs, as neither team boasts significant offensive firepower. We got a look at Arizona’s relentless playing style during a seven-game series against the Blues in which the Yotes collected nine points. Arizona won the seventh game by a 1-0 score thanks to 15 blocked shots and a shutout by Kuemper.

With Kings’ forward Anze Kopitar being the only player from either team to rank in the top-50 for league scoring, the red-hot goalies have the opportunity to steal the show Thursday. Even if plenty of power plays get handed out, both these teams have great penalty kill units that rank among the best in the league. Trust the goalies and bet the “under”.

Pick: Under 5.5 (-115)
