Odds and specials have been released for the Seattle Kraken following the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft on Wednesday, July 21st. Ron Francis’ team made 30 selections in the draft and will begin play in the Pacific Division in the 2021-22 NHL season.

Seattle is being listed as +5000 longshots in the 2022 Stanley Cup odds, but their odds to make the playoffs are much better. The Kraken will open their season with a matchup against the last expansion team, the Vegas Golden Knights.

Seattle will be hard-pressed to reach 88 points in their inaugural season following an underwhelming expansion draft. The Kraken have some solid core pieces, including Mark Giordano, but their roster is lacking elite talent. Chris Driedger is a solid goaltending option, but when Jordan Eberle, Jared McCann, and Yanni Gourde are your top forwards, goal scoring is sure to be an issue.

Taking a look at the last full 82-game NHL season in 2018-19, the Kraken’s 88 points would’ve put them 10th in the Western Conference and out of the postseason. The Kraken on paper appear to be a fringe playoff team. Vegas exploded for 109 points in its inaugural season, but there’s no denying Seattle’s initial roster isn’t as talented.

Seattle passed on many big names in the Expansion Draft like Carey Price, Vladimir Tarasenko, Dougie Hamilton, and Gabriel Landeskog in order to save salary cap space. 88 points is pretty realistic for a team lacking significant game-breaking talent. Kraken Can Take Advantage of Weak Pacific 

If Seattle’s projected point total is too hard to call, there could be value betting them to make the playoffs in the 2021-22 NHL season. The Pacific Division is currently in a downswing, with only Vegas and Edmonton being listed at +3000 or better to win the 2022 Stanley Cup. Despite a lackluster roster, the Kraken will have a decent chance of winning every division game that isn’t against Vegas.

The thing you need to consider when betting the Kraken is that their roster isn’t set in stone. In the 2017 Expansion Draft, the Golden Knights made a plethora of side deals that saw them land Shea Theodore, Alex Tuch, and Reilly Smith via trade. Seattle has yet to make any trades, but GM Francis should be busy this offseason to further improve the team.

In the Pacific Division, the California teams are all rebuilding, the Flames just lost their heart-and-soul captain and the Canucks are coming off their worst season in some time. The value is on Seattle getting better before puck drop and making the playoffs in year one.

Seattle Kraken vs Vegas Golden Knights Odds – Oct. 12th

Kraken Debut in Sin City 

The Kraken will begin its inaugural season against the Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Oct. 12. Odds have already been released for the game that lists Vegas as overwhelming home favorites. This isn’t surprising considering Seattle’s disappointing expansion draft and the fact Vegas excels on home ice.

The Golden Knights went 21-5-2 at T-Mobile Arena last season and covered the spread in 12 of those games. Vegas will have 100 percent arena capacity in 2021-22, which makes this matchup for Seattle far from ideal. Seattle will be hungry to prove their worth in their season opener, but Vegas also has plenty to prove after getting upset by Montreal in the NHL Playoffs Semi-Finals.

Given Seattle’s lack of offensive firepower, the “under” is a strong lean in this game. Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury is coming off a Vezina-winning campaign, while Kraken netminder Driedger impressed with a .927 save percentage in Florida. Vegas struggled to score in the playoffs, so this could be a game where Driedger bails out the Kraken offense and wins over the fanbase with a strong crease debut.
