What a difference a year makes. It was only one year ago when Florida and Colorado finished 1-2 in the league in regular-season points with Colorado capturing the Stanley Cup, but halfway through this season, both are on the outside of the playoff picture in their respective conferences.

Both teams will look to put a disappointing first half of the season behind them as they make a postseason push in the second half. On Tuesday, January 10th they’ll meet for the first time this season at Ball Arena with the faceoff scheduled for 9:30 pm ET in the Mile High City.

This game will be broadcast on HULU and Sportsnet One. As the home side and with more and more players returning from injury, the Avalanche are -134 favorites on the moneyline. More Panthers vs Avalanche odds, plus our best bet and prediction can be seen below.

Only three points currently separate these teams in the standings, the exact amount of points that Florida topped the Avs by last year to capture the Presidents’ Trophy. Nevertheless, it was the Avalanche who achieved the ultimate goal, winning their first Stanley Cup since 2001.

Taking a look at the current state of both these squads, they can only dream of being in a similar situation if they make the playoffs this year. First things first, Tuesday’s clash where Colorado are -134 favorites on the moneyline gives them a 57.26% implied win probability for his matchup.

Panthers’ One of NHL’s Worst Moneyline Bets

One year removed from the best regular season in club history, the Panthers just can’t find any consistency. They’ve gone from being one of the preseason favorites to sitting at +2650 in the Stanley Cup odds.

Money has been there to be made if you’ve been betting against this Panthers squad in the NHL odds on the moneyline this year. Only Calgary has provided a better return on investment when betting on a team to lose straight up this campaign.

For the Panthers to have success against Colorado, they’d be wise to stay out of the penalty box, something that has given them difficulty this season. They are the third most penalized team in the league and are bottom third in the league in penalty killing percentage.

The Avalanche have some of the most highly-skilled forwards in the league to go along with dynamic offensive defenseman Cale Makar, so not going shorthanded should be a priority come game time for the Panthers.

Colorado Avalanche Betting Analysis

There are not a lot of teams that have been more injury-ravaged than the Colorado Avalanche this year, but the good news for them is, help is on the way.

Nathan MacKinnon returned to the lineup last week and it appears as though Bowen Byram’s return is imminent as well. Undoubtedly, they’ve been very banged up, but it’s still shocking to see them sitting outside of the playoffs with half of the season in the bag.

Perhaps they can take some momentum from an inspiring comeback in their last contest against the Oilers. Down 2-0 in the 3rd period, the Avs battled back before Cale Makar scored a sensational overtime game-winner.

The preseason favorite to repeat in the Norris Trophy odds, Makar got off to a slow start by his standards with no goals in October after tallying 28 times last year. Nevertheless, he rebounded, keeping the team competitive amidst all the absences and has scored 10 goals in his last 29 games.

Anchoring the 10th-ranked power play in the NHL, he’s second in points by blueliners on the man advantage. The Alberta native will look to bulk up that total against an undisciplined Florida team when they meet on Tuesday.

Panthers vs Avalanche Pick and Prediction

As the top two teams in the NHL last season, they split the season series, with each team emerging victorious on home ice. Although these were two of the top four offenses in the league, they went under the total in both head-to-head contests.

Florida is coming off a disappointing 5-1 road loss to the Stars after winning two in a row. Incredibly, the best team in the regular season last year has failed to string together more than two wins in a row to this point.

Special teams have been a major issue as they are bottom third in the league in both the power play and penalty kill. On the road, they’ve given up the first goal in each of the last three contests with the only win during that time coming against the lowly Coyotes.

Colorado is just as desperate for wins at this point as the Panthers are. With home ice advantage to go along with a major special teams advantage, the home squad looks like the best pick in the Panthers vs Avalanche odds.

Pick: Colorado Avalanche Moneyline (-134)
