The Pittsburgh Penguins are arguably the biggest story in the NHL right now for all the wrong reasons. Sidney Crosby’s squad has lost seven games in a row, the most for the franchise since Sid was literally a kid in his rookie season.

Next up, as the Pens try to snap that skid is Crosby’s forever rival, Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, November 9th. This prime-time matchup can be seen on TNT with the puck drop slated for 7:30 pm ET from Capital One Arena in Washington.

Despite being mired in a terrible slump, the Penguins are -132 road favorites against the Capitals in a game that features an over/under total of 6.5 goals. Check out all the Penguins vs Capitals odds below including our best bet and pick for this game.

It might come across as a bit of a surprise that the Capitals are underdogs considering the Pens recent struggles. At +108 on the moneyline, the Caps have an implied win probability of 48.08% while the Pens implied probability to take this one is 56.9% with moneyline odds of -132.

Pittsburgh Penguins Surprising Road Favorites

There are quite a few reasons that the Penguins being the chalk in this game is a bit of a stunner. First off, the aforementioned porous seven-game skid, which is well-deserved. Included in those seven losses are two defeats to the second-year Kraken and a loss to the Canucks, who only have more points than one team in the Western Conference.

In addition, the Penguins’ worst play has come on the road this year where they have only one win from seven games. This isn’t the type of play expected from a team who is amongst the top 10 contenders in the Stanley Cup odds.

One possible reason why they’re favorites in the Wednesday NHL odds, could simply be the desperation that you’d expect them to play with. Although it’s still very early, the Pens are only ahead of the Senators and Blue Jackets in the Eastern Conference Standings.

If this streak extends much longer it might push them into a position from which they won’t be able to recover.

Washington Capitals Betting Outlook

Washington has had a bit of a roller coaster season themselves, but should be a bit lighter on the ice following a 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Ovechkin notched his eighth goal of the season in that one as he looks to maintain his spot amongst the leaders in the Rocket Richard Trophy odds.

Unfortunately for the Capitals, the injury bug has been ravaging their roster. Already without top 6 forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson to start the year, T.J. Oshie, Connor Brown, John Carlson and Dmitry Orlov have joined the infirmary.

Out of all those players, it seems as if Orlov is the only one who might be back anytime soon. If the Caps are down their two top defensemen it will put additional pressure on projected starting goalie Darcy Kuemper who has a 2.42 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in his first year with Washington after signing as a free agent.

These teams have gone over the betting total in six of their last seven matchups. In fact, the Penguins and Capitals have combined to go over the betting total in 13 of their last 16 meetings.

With the Capitals missing a couple key blueliners and the Penguins struggling to play the right way, this could be an early season old-fashioned shootout between two rivals on TNT.

Penguins vs Capitals Pick & Prediction

Goals are what this game is screaming for and to add a couple more quirky stats to the mix, the over is 5-0 in the Penguins last five Wednesday games and 6-0 in the Capitals last six Wednesday games.

The over seems like a very logical pick in the Penguins vs Capitals odds, but the best bet here is to take the Pens to snap their losing streak and pick them on the moneyline. Pittsburgh is 16-8 against the Capitals when coming off a loss over their last 24 games. That’s a winning percentage of 66.7%.

On top of that, they need a victory badly and although the Caps somehow defeated the Oilers on Monday, the injuries are piling up too much for a decimated roster. The prediction here is that Crosby and the Pens are geared up for a game against their rivals and deliver a much-needed win.

Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins Moneyline (-132)
