Following disappointing seasons last year, both the Red Wings and the Islanders were hoping to make a serious push for playoff spots this year, but they currently sit 11th and 12th in the Eastern Conference and will need a miraculous second-half push to nab a berth in the postseason.

On Friday, January 27th, these two sides do battle in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN at 7:00 pm ET from UBS Arena. Despite a six-game losing skid, the Islanders are secure -183 favorites for their tango with Detroit.

We provide all the Red Wings vs Islanders odds below while analyzing what bet makes the most sense in this contest.

It’s not often you see a team that’s not in playoff position and on a six-game losing streak with comfortable -183 moneyline odds, but that’s the situation the Islanders find themselves in against the Red Wings.

They have an implied win probability of 64.66% with Detroit’s probability sitting at 40% to score the upset while playing their third game in four nights.

Red Wings Road Struggles

While the Red Wings are poised to improve on last year’s 74-point campaign, it doesn’t appear like they’ll be playing important hockey in March. They currently sit 12th in the Eastern Conference. Since the beginning of December, they own a 10-12-3 record, 24th overall in the league during that span.

Last year, Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond were battling it out for a large portion of the year in the Calder Trophy odds, with the Red Wings blueliner eventually emerging as the runaway favorite, easily winning the award.

Neither has really taken a further step this year like the Red Wings hoped, although Seider did have three helpers in a 4-3 overtime win on the road against the Canadiens Thursday night.

Speaking of road wins, that’s another issue that has plagued Motown this season. Only two teams in the East have fewer road wins than the Red Wings nine so far this campaign. They have taken two in a row as the visiting side after previously dropping eight of nine on the road. Detroit shutout the Isles back in November.

Red Wings vs Islanders Recent Results

03/24/2022 NYI 5 – DET 2 NYI NYI Over
12/14/2021 DET 2 – NYI 1 DET NYI Under
12/04/2021 DET 4 – NYI 3 (OT) DET NYI Over
02/21/2020 NYI 4 – DET 1 NYI NYI Under

When looking at the recent meetings between these two squads, one trend stands out. The home team has won six in a row and eight of the last nine meetings. Keeping Detroit’s road struggles this season in mind, this is something to keep in mind when making your pick in the NHL odds for this tilt.

Islanders Looking to Snap 6 Game Skid

On January 5th, the Islanders were holding the last Wild Card playoff spot in the East, a couple points ahead of the Penguins. Since then, they have won just one of 10 games and are currently riding a six-game losing streak.

This has been an organization known for its structure and defensive acumen over the last few years which has allowed them to have considerable playoff success. It was only two years ago they pushed Tampa Bay to a game 7 in the Eastern Conference Finals, losing a 1-0 heartbreaker in that series-deciding game.

Eventually though, you need to find goals to win games. Over these last 10 contests, the Islanders have found the back of the net just 16 times, an average of just 1.6 goals per game.

Luckily for them, they have Ilya Sorokin tending goal. The Russian remains a stiff competitor in the Vezina Trophy odds, in spite of his team’s poor record as of late.

Red Wings vs Islanders Pick and Prediction

After sweating out a win in the extra session against the Canadiens, expect the Wings to come out a bit slow out of the gate on no days rest. They have won only 30% of their last 54 games in the second half of playing back-to-back nights.

While the Islanders haven’t provided much incentive to bet on them, they have to get a W sooner or later. Given all the challenges the Red Wings will have to overcome in this contest, we like the home side to put this nightmare of a month behind them with a victory.
