  • Chasing a Wild Card playoff spot in the East, Buffalo has dropped four straight games

Sliding at the wrong time of the season, the Buffalo Sabres look to snap their four game losing skid when they head a couple hours across the border to play the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday, March 13th at Scotiabank Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm ET in a game that can be seen on MSG Buffalo in the US and Sportsnet in Canada.

Just two weeks ago, the Sabres had the 7th best points percentage in the Eastern Conference, but since then, they have gone 1-5-1 and have fallen four spots down the standings. Needless to say, they need to get back on track in a hurry to avoid falling completely out of the picture in the NHL playoff odds.

It won’t be easy, facing the Maple Leafs who are 4th overall in the NHL at this point. Below, you can find the Sabres vs Maple Leafs odds as well as our best bet and pick for this contest.

Sabres vs Maple Leafs Odds

Game Time Team Puck Line Total Moneyline
Monday, March 13th Buffalo Sabres +1.5 (-118) O 6.5 (-148) +198
7:30 PM Toronto Maple Leafs -1.5 (-102) U 6.5 (+120) -245

Having won four in row at home, the Maple Leafs are very comfortable -245 moneyline favorites against Buffalo on Monday evening. During that four game home win streak, the Leafs have taken three of those contests by two goals or more.

Sabres’ Desperate to End NHL’s Longest Active Playoff Drought

Things could be going from bad to worse for the Sabres as they get set to encounter the Maple Leafs. After falling 2-1 in overtime to the Rangers on Saturday, a couple of defensemen were missing at practice on Sunday.

Rasmus Dahlin, who is having a season that’s put him amongst the contenders in the Norris trophy odds, is listed as day-to-day, while promising rookie blueliner, Mattias Samuelsson will be out for an extended period of time.

The good news, Alex Tuch looks like he will draw back into the lineup. Since he’s been out, the Sabres have gone just 2-5-1, falling down the Eastern Conference standings.

It all looked so encouraging for Buffalo a couple weeks ago, as they appeared poised to end the longest active playoff drought in the league.

NHL Longest Active Playoff Droughts

Team Years Last Playoff Appearance
Buffalo Sabres 11 2012
Detroit Red Wings 6 2017
Ottawa Senators 5 2018

Another disturbing trend as they get set for this matchup with their Atlantic Division rivals, is Buffalo’s recent lack of success playing on just one days rest. They are 1-5 in their last six in those situations, after starting the year 19-9-3 when playing under those circumstances.

Maple Leafs Stars Earning Their Money

A lot has been made of the amount of cap space occupied by Toronto’s top four forwards, but when they produce like they did on Saturday, in an entertaining 7-4 Maple Leafs win over the Oilers, that money appears to be well spent.

The quartet of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander all scored in that victory over Connor McDavid’s Oil, and combined for 11 points. They are the reason the Buds are consistently a strong consideration in the Stanley Cup odds.

Sheldon Keefe’s squad has made a habit of playing up, or down to their competition this year, so they would be mindful not to have a letdown against a desperate Sabres side. Toronto defeated Buffalo the previous two times they met this year and the teams went over the total in the NHL odds in both of those games.

Sabres vs Maple Leafs Pick and Prediction

Last time these teams met, the ate the Sabres alive, jumping out to a 4-0 first period lead in what ultimately led to a 6-3 victory.

Pick Odds
Sabres Under 2.5 Regulation Goals -110
Maple Leafs Over 3.5 Regulation Goals -155
PARLAY ODDS  +200

Not only do the Sabres have injuries and a losing slide to contend with, they’ll also likely be facing a goalie who has been lights out for the Leafs on home ice this year. Ilya Samsonov is expected to get the call in net and owns a 17-2-1 record at Scotiabank Arena this campaign with a 2.01 goals against average and .926 save percentage.

Needless to say, things appear to look ominous for the Sabres as they approach this matchup. Our prediction is that the Maple Leafs enforce their will on a struggling Sabres side who may have run out of gas a month too early.

Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs Puck Line -1.5 (-103)
