Without one of the biggest names in 100 meter women’s track and field competing at the Tokyo Olympics, sprinters from around the globe will hit the track when competition kicks off in Japan on Thursday, July 29th.

The likely favorite coming into this competition, United States sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson, won’t be competing in Tokyo after accepting a suspension following a failed drug test during the Olympic Trials in June. That leaves the 100 meter race open for others to try and claim the top spot on the podium going into the weekend.

The entirety of the competition featuring some of the top women’s sprinters around the world can be viewed live and on replay on CNBC, NBC Sports, NBC Olympics and Peacock.

Favorites to Know

As seen in the early betting odds, Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (-125) is the clear favorite to come away with Olympic gold for the third time of her track and field career. Behind Fraser-Pryce is fellow teammate Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica (+170) and Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith (+600).

Fraser-Pryce will try and sprint for a medal to add to her collection of six Olympic medals, medals she earned in Beijing in 2008, London in 2012 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016.  The 34-year-old has two gold medals (2008, 2012), three silver medals (two in 2012, one in 2016) and one bronze medal (2016). Fraser-Pryce has also claimed nine gold and two silver world championship medals over her career.

Thompson-Herah is competing in her second straight Olympics, having claimed gold in the 100 meter race in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. In competition leading up to the Tokyo Olympics, Thompson-Herah also upset Fraser-Pryce and the rest of the field to win the Olympic 100 meter sprint at the Gyulai István Memorial in Hungary in July.

Asher-Smith is also taking part in her second consecutive Olympic games in Tokyo, but has yet to win an Olympic medal in the 100 meter race in her young career. Asher-Smith has claimed one silver medal in world championship competition, but will be looking to stand on the Olympic podium for the first time in Japan.

Jamaica Will Be Tough to Top

Jamaica is well represented atop the early odds for favorites to come away with a medal in the 100 meter competition this weekend, with three sprinters residing within the top five betting odds according to FanDuel.

With Fraser-Pryce and Thompson-Herah sitting as the two favorites, Shericka Jackson (+1000) comes in tied with Blessing Okagbare (+1000) for fourth on the list to win gold in Tokyo.

Jamaica will be tough to beat and are poised to have at least one of those three sprinters represent their country atop the podium by the end of the final round on Saturday.

Oliver, Daniels Headline USA

For the United States, the duo of Javianne Oliver (+5000) and Teahna Daniels (+9500) headline Team USA in the sprint in the Tokyo Olympics.

YouTube video

Oliver, who is competing in her first Olympic games, is ranked 8th in the world in 100 meter women’s competition. The 26 year old has one silver world championship medal on her resume, that coming in 2020 in the 60 meter sprint.

Daniels is also taking part in her first Olympics, coming in ranked 11th in the world in 100 meter competition. Daniels has one gold world championship in her career, being part of a first-place 4×100 meter relay team in 2019.

Best Bet

When it comes to the best bet to go home with a gold medal, or at least a medal in general, in the 100 meter Olympic sprint, it’s hard to go against either one of the Jamaicans atop the list of favorites.

If USA’s Richardson was taking part in this race, that would change and impact things. But without the United States star competing, look for Fraser-Pryce and Thompson-Herah to record strong performances and put themselves in prime positions to come away with at least silver or gold in Tokyo. Outside of those two, Asher-Smith will likely be right there at the end of 100 meter competition as well. Those three could very well round out the three medal placements in 100 meter women’s track and field competition.
