With the new playoffs system in College Football, the Oregon Ducks have a real shot at getting to the College Football Championship game, especially now that their quarterback Marcus Mariota, injured last season, is back on his feet and ready to roll in 2014.

The Oregon Ducks high-pace offense is the main asset we all know that, but the arrival new defensive coordinator Don Pellum should make the difference between a successful season and the ‘what if’.

The defense lost linebackers Tyrell Robinson and Oshay Dunmore; both were transferred out of Oregon, and a lot of questions have been raised about how second-year head coach handless these situations.

“Whether it’s one transfer or multiple transfers every story is its own, and everybody wants to make it a big deal,” Helfrich said. “But the vast majority obviously are guys who are trying to play and further their career at the best place they think they can get on the field the fastest. In a couple situations, that was different and it’s not a ‘smoking gun’ situation, it’s a situation where we’re going to do things a certain way, and that’s very well understood.”

“We’re talking about are guys who weren’t, for whatever reason, at the top of the depth chart and that happens,” Helfrich added. “There are guys who absolutely will step up whether they’re young guys, old guys or in between. Here in a couple months we’ll find out who that is.”

Starting the season with these two situations is not a good sign for a program that has the National Championship title printed on their minds years ago.

The Oregon Ducks are listed +600 to win The 2014/2015 College Football Championship, but they are the favorites to win the PAC 12 Conference, rated at +100.

Marcus Mariota needs to lead this team to success, but also, junior RB Byron Marshall is the Pac-12’s top returning tailback after a 1,038-yard in the 2013 season.

“First and foremost, I wanted to get my degree,” Mariota said about returning for his senior year. “My family has always valued education, and that was basically the major factor that brought me back. Secondly, it was to come back and enjoy college. You experience so many new things, and I wasn’t ready to leave all that just yet.”

Marcus Mariota is +700 to win the Heisman Trophy, only quarterbacks Jameis Winston (Florida St) and Braxton Miller (Ohio State) have better odds.
