Gun Control Legislation
  • Gun control legislation has been a hotly discussed topic in America for years
  • Will the government instantiate some sort of change to the present gun laws?
  • Will lawmakers continue to turn a blind eye to the ongoing gun violence?

Gun control legislation is one of the most pressing socio-political issues of this generation. Gun owners feel like their rights are being encroached upon. Some theorize that the government is trying to leave the public vulnerable. Others recognize the overwhelming empirical evidence that gun violence is a huge issue that requires meaningful change.

It’s a tug-of-war kind of situation with myriad tendrils attached. And now you can bet on it! Betting sites have released a series of gun control props, which are set out and analyzed below.

Odds taken 09/17/19.

The rates of gun violence in America as compared to the rest of the world paint a stark picture. On an international level, a variety of other countries have responded to horrendous shootings with comprehensive gun-control laws, and their efforts have produced measurable results.

The US government’s focus on other comparatively minor issues, like e-cigarettes, instead of this is confusing, as well as upsetting for many. It’s clearly a herculean task to get all representatives on board with what constitutes reasonable gun control.

It’s clearly a herculean task to get all representatives on board with what constitutes reasonable gun control.

There’s a lot of rhetoric out there about this being a situation that infringes on the rights of responsible gun owners. Some people see it as easy as doing a universal background check and things will be good to go.

Obviously the situation is much more nuanced and complex. Public sentiment is squarely in the corner of more gun control. However, it’s not nearly as clear cut for the decision-makers. There’s also the looming presence of the NRA. The National Rifle Association is one of the most influential interest groups in the country, it creates a perverse incentive to appease them.

With the present ideological makeup of the house, there’s a less than a 50-percent chance of any meaningful gun control legislation going forward, in my view.

As mentioned, it will be hard to get the necessary votes in Congress to pass meaningful gun-control legislation. Creating a cohesive and comprehensive piece of gun-control legislation is nearly impossible given all the stakeholders involved. Some won’t tolerate any. Some won’t abide anything short of, e.g., a complete assault-weapons ban.

It’s rare to see lawmakers put a bill forward for a vote if they know it won’t pass.

Pick: Legislation will not get voted on (-1000)
