  • Sportsbooks are offering a prop bet favoring Tom Steyer to be included in the September Democratic Presidential debates
  • The sportsbook is giving odds that neither Kirsten Gillibrand or Tulsi Gabbard will be part of the September debates
  • Both Gabbard and Gillibrand participated in the first two rounds of debates

Tom Steyer may be the last of the candidates to enter the chase for the 2020 Democratic Presidential nomination, but sportsbooks don’t believe that he’ll also be the least.

The sportsbook is out with a package of prop wagers on the upcoming September Democratic Presidential debates and the odds favor that Steyer will be included in the debates.

However, sportsbooks are offering odds against the prospects of Senator Kirsten Gillbrand or House member Tulsi Gabbard being involved in the September debates. Both were part of the first two rounds of debates.

To be welcomed into the third round of debates, candidates must reach a threshold of two percent support in a minimum of four polls. They must also  acquire donations from 130,000 unique donors.

Qualifications for the first two rounds were polling at one percent and the acquisition of 65,000 donors.

Will Tom Steyer Qualify For September Democratic Presidential Debates?

Outcome Odds
Yes -500
No +300

*Odds taken 8/20/19.

Steyer believes that his populist, anti-corporate message will resonate with the masses. At +10,000 in the Democratic Presidential odds, he’s got work to do.

It hasn’t been a month yet since the billionaire hedge fund owner entered the fray. He’s ramped up his ad campaign, spending $10 million to book television and online ads to run during the first month of his campaign.

Part of the message Steyer delivered is to encourage people to donate at least $1 to his campaign to reach the donor threshold, and it’s worked. He’s achieved the donor goal.

He’s gained at least two percent in three polls taken as well, just one more to go and he’s in the debate.

Pick: Yes (-500)

Will Tulsi Gabbard Qualify For September Democratic Presidential Debates?

Outcome Odds
Yes +400
No -800

As of Tuesday, 10 candidates were assured of a spot on the debate stage but Gabbard wasn’t one of them. The Congresswoman from Hawaii has hit the donor threshold but has polled at two percent just twice.

She’ll need to do that twice more by August 28th, the cutoff to qualify for the next round of debates, which will take place September 12th and 13th in Houston.

Gabbard’s dilemma is twofold. She doesn’t have the reservoir of cash accessible to other candidates to run an advertising blitz. Meanwhile, she’s also been deployed for two weeks of active duty in Indonesia with the Hawaii Army National Guard.

That means her campaign is on hold at exactly the time she needs to be front and center. On the other hand, her patriotic call to answer military service just might create the support she needs to drive her polling numbers upward.

Gabbard has sought to encourage her supporters to sign up for online survey panels and to answer calls from unknown numbers that could be from pollsters.

Pick: Yes (+400)

Will Kirsten Gillibrand Qualify For September Democratic Presidential Debates?

Outcome Odds
Yes +600
No -1200

Gillibrand’s campaign looks to be on life support and in vital need of a transfusion. The New York Senator has hit two percent in only one poll. She’s also yet to meet the fundraising criteria.

Desperate to stay in the hunt, Gillbrand has used funds transferred from her Senate campaign and spent over $1 million on television ads in Iowa and New Hampshire, seeking to improve her poll numbers.

Pick: No (-1200)
