Trump’s Approval Numbers Had Declined Up Until This Week

Although Trump has had a tough time corralling an approval number above 50%, he started to approach that mark at the end of February. You might recall the impeachment situation backfired on the Democrats and the country had given Trump a boost in terms of approval as a result.

Trump actually hit a 49% approval rating on February 23, eclipsing the 48% disapproval rating. That’s a huge improvement for him as he had been in the 37%-range in September of 2019. The challenge for Trump was the coronavirus as that completely dulled his moment.

When the COVID-19 pandemic slowly started to hit, Trump continued with his brash, confident speaking as if the virus wasn’t going to be a problem. Instead of taking a more serious tone that many other leaders around the world chose to go with, Trump basically implied the coronavirus wouldn’t be a major thing.

That’s how his numbers receded from the highs. As the virus spread and people saw what kind of disaster we might have on our hands, Trump sounded like a leader that was unprepared. The good news is he’s changed his tone and that’s made a big difference.

Trump’s Approval Back On The Rise

To the surprise of many, it really only took a week of Trump being a serious leader and toning down the rhetoric to turn around his numbers. As they were inching back towards 40%, he came out this week and really spoke like a leader. He appeared in front of the camera every day with the Coronavirus Response Team and answered all questions.

Trump has shown empathy and has actually worked really well with Democrats too. On Friday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Trump, asking him to invoke the Defense Production Act, and Trump yelled to an aid while they were on the phone to get it done immediately.

Also, California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been quite critical of Trump in the past, has really raved about how Trump and the federal government have been giving California all of the assistance they need. As a result, an ABC News/Ipsos poll showed that 55% of the country approves how Trump is handling the health crisis. That’s great news for him.

What’s the Best Bet?

At this point, I’d bet the over. If you take a look at trend from recent polls in the last week, his numbers are trending up. He was at 43% in polls on Saturday and 44% on Sunday, but the latest polls from Rasmussen Reports and Emerson have him at 46%.

Barring a flub over the weekend, I expect Trump’s numbers to continue to rise and get over 43.5 on Monday. Beyond that, his 2020 elections odds should also get a boost if he keeps this up.
