F1 2020 Constructors’ Championship Odds – Racing Point Favored to Outpace Renault, McLaren

As the Formula 1 season enters its final month, little intrigue remains at the top of the F1 Drivers Constructors Standings. With their fifth 1-2 finish of the season last time out at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Mercedes clinched a seventh straight F1 Constructors title, and it would take a total collapse for Red Bull Racing to lose their firm grip on second place.

However, it remains a near dead heat in the battle for third place. Renault F1 currently lead the way by just a single point, but it is Racing Point that sit perched as +140 favorites in the F1 Constructors’ Championship odds to enjoy the best finishing position in the standings at the end of the season.

Pink Mercedes a Game Changer for Racing Point

Powered by their trademark Pink Mercedes, Racing Point have made enormous strides this season. Sergio Perez is on pace to have his best-ever F1 season, cracking the top 10 on 11 occasions, and seizing control of sixth place in the F1 Drivers Standings despite missing two races due to COVID-19.

The 30-year-old also owns a steady track record in F1 events held in the Middle East, where the final three races of the season will be held, finishing among the top eight in each of his past six appearances in Abu Dhabi, and recording one of his eight career podium finishes in Bahrain.

Stroll Emerging as Liability

However, Perez’ Racing Point teammate Lance Stroll has emerged as a massive liability, with the young Canadian going into freefall since finishing third at the Italian Grand Prix.

Stroll missed the Eifel Grand Prix after testing positive for COVID-19, and has been disastrous when on the track, with his 13th-place performance two weeks ago at Imola marking his only finish in four outings.

Stroll has often been his own worst enemy, with sometimes reckless driving contributing to his three recent retirements and a growing number of penalties.

Ricciardo Powering Renault’s Late-Season Surge

With Stroll stumbling badly, and owning a track record of futility in past appearances in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, opportunity knocks for both Renault and McLaren to make gains in the Formula 1 Drivers Standings.

Daniel Ricciardo is turning in his best results since joining the team at the start of 2019, lifting Renault to a +175 bet to conclude the season with the best finishing position. The 31-year-old Australian has finished third in two of his past three outings, and his six top five finishes have lifted him into fourth place in the Drivers Standings, 13 points ahead of Perez.

Ricciardo has also recorded a combined six career top five finishes at Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, but has finished out of the points in four of his past five appearances. That bodes poorly for Renault considering the season-long inconsistency of Ricciardo’s teammate Esteban Ocon.

The 24-year-old Frenchman has among the top ten this season seven times this season, but has also retired on four occasions, including three of his past five outings. Not all of Ocon’s struggles have been his fault. He received an apology from team principal Cyril Abiteboul for the reliability problems that bounced him from the race at Imola. However, a strong finish by Ocon is an absolute must if Renault is to make gains in the standings.

Sainz, Norris’ Consistency Boosts McLaren’s Value

While the 2020 season has not been without its road bumps for Carlos Sainz Jr. and Lando Norris, the McLaren teammates have turned in steady results without the drama. Now in his second full season of F1 racing, Norris has collected points in nine of 13 outings, including four top five finishes.

While a combination of bad luck and technical problems caused Sainz to retire in Belgium, Tuscany, and Russia, he has regained his form to finish no worse than seventh over his past three outings.

Norris enjoyed impressive debuts among the point-getters last season in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi. And with Sainz finishing well ahead of his qualifying position in each of the past three races, McLaren represents the most consistent option among the three rival F1 teams, and offers solid value as a +205 to outpace Renault and Racing Point at season’s end.
