Max Verstappen will be looking to build on his impressive victory at last weekend’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix when he hits the track on Sunday (Aug. 16, 9:10 am ET) at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.

The Red Bull number-one has the third-best odds to win at +450, behind both Mercedes drivers.

Verstappen Capitalizing on Mercedes Woes

Verstappen has shown steady improvement since failing to finish in the first race of the F1 season in Austria. The 22-year-old has four straight podium finishes since, capped by last weekend’s dominant performance at Silverstone. Now returning to the scene of his first career F1 victory four years ago, Verstappen faces a massive challenge to end the dominance of rival Lewis Hamilton, who has taken home the checkered flag in Barcelona in each of the past three years.

While Verstappen has been steady on the track since being thwarted by an electronic issue at the Austria Grand Prix, he has also benefited from the bad luck that has befallen Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas in the past two races.

Hamilton managed to outpace Verstappen for the win two weeks ago at the British Grand Prix despite suffering a catastrophic tire failure on the last lap of the race. Bottas also suffered tire failure in that race, dropping him from second to 11th place.

Vaunted Silver Arrows Hobbled by Tire Troubles

Tires were once again an issue for Mercedes at the second race at Silverstone in as many weeks, with high heat on race day, and the challenging track design contributing to severe blistering on the tires. With Red Bull anticipating Mercedes’ tire issues, Verstappen was ready, showing off his impressive skill to overtake the Mercedes duo early on and power to victory, over 11 seconds in front of Hamilton.

While Hamilton showed his ugly side by suggesting that Red Bull had broken the rules by under inflating Verstappen’s tires, he should be much more concerned about whether tire issues will persist in Barcelona. The temperature is expected to reach 30 Celsius or higher over the weekend.

The winner of three of five races so far, Hamilton continues to lead the way as a -190 favorite to claim a fourth straight Spanish Grand Prix, followed by Bottas at +275. But with the tire issue still looming, neither Mercedes driver offers much value in the race day odds heading into the weekend.

Bottas on the Pole?

Qualifying is a completely different matter. Mercedes drivers have claimed the pole position in each of the past seven editions of this race. That trend has helped lift Hamilton to a -182 favorite to start on the pole.

However, it is Bottas who provides the most value as a +190 wager. In addition to capturing the pole at this race a year ago, Bottas has been a steady presence in qualifying this season, starting from the front row in four of five races, and twice on the pole.

Pink Mercedes a Persistent Threat

Further down the Spanish Grand Prix odds, Racing Point’s Sergio Perez returns to action leading the middle of the pack as a +3300 bet after contracting COVID-19 and missing both races at Silverstone. Perez and his Pink Mercedes teammate Lance Stroll have been persistent threats this season, with the duo finishing among the top seven in six of their combined eight outings.

While neither Racing Point driver has enjoyed much success in past appearances in Barcelona, the duo are a solid -165 bet to both finish in the top ten in Sunday morning’s race.

Awaiting Albon’s Breakthrough

Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate, Alex Albon, also remains poised for a long-awaited breakthrough. The 24-year-old overcame a shaky start from the No. 9 spot on the grid to make a spectacular climb into fifth place. He has also flirted with the fastest lap in each of his two recent outings at Silverstone.

Albon continues to offer exceptional value at +500 odds to claim his first-ever podium, and cannot be overlooked as a lengthy +1600 bet to record the fastest lap.
