Hamilton on Cruise Control after Clinching Title

Hamilton reached the podium for the 16th time this season with his second place at Austin, and has taken home the checkered flag on 10 occasions, leaving him just 28 points shy of a second straight record-breaking campaign going into Sunday afternoon’s running of the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix at Autódromo José Carlos Pace.

The 34-year-old Englishman set a new Formula One record last season with 408 points, and currently sits 67 points up on Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas in the Formula One Drivers Standings. With the Mercedes duo now out of reach of the rest of the pack, the betting focus has turned to which non-Mercedes driver will finish the season with the highest point total.

Leclerc Seeks End to Recent Struggles

Currently entrenched in third place, Charles Leclerc sits as the clear favorite to be the top driver without Mercedes, sporting short -200 odds. The 22-year-old Monte Carlo native has enjoyed a breakthrough in his second full season of F1 driving, recording a pair of wins and reaching the podium on nine occasions.

Leclerc has struggled down the stretch, finishing off the podium in each of the past three races, and sits well off the pace in the Brazilian Grand Prix odds as a lengthy +1000 bet.

However, Leclerc has struggled down the stretch, finishing off the podium in each of the past three races, and sits well off the pace in the Brazilian Grand Prix odds as a lengthy +1000 bet.

Leclerc also turned in a disappointing seventh-place finish in his debut at Brazil last year. With just a 14-point lead over Max Verstappen in the Drivers Standings, he can ill afford another subpar performance this weekend.

Year Driver Margin of Victory
2018 Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes 1.469 sec
2017 Sebastian Vettel – Ferrari 2.762 sec
2016 Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes 11.455 sec
2015 Nico Rosberg – Mercedes 7.756 sec
2014 Nico Rosberg – Mercedes 1.457 sec

Verstappen Looks to Close Gap on Leclerc

With two podium finishes in three career appearances at Brazil, Verstappen enters this weekend’s race trailing only Hamilton as a +305 second favorite. The Red Bull Racing driver has made consistent gains in his third full season of F1 racing, picking up a pair of wins and finishing among the top five on 15 occasions, leaving him just 14 points shy of the career-record 249 points he compiled in 2018.

Verstappen has lost ground to Leclerc on the Formula One Drivers Standings during a shaky seven-race stretch that has featured just two trips to the podium and two races which he failed to finish. But his strong track record at both Brazil and Abu Dhabi, where the season wraps up, make him an intriguing +315 wager to finish atop the standings without Mercedes.

Experience on Vettel’s Side

A wealth of experience at Brazil and Abu Dhabi also benefit Leclerc’s Ferrari partner Sebastian Vettel in his bid to climb to third in the F1 Drivers Standings. The four-time Formula One champion has endured a difficult campaign, earning just one win, leaving him well of the pace that earned him 320 points and a second-place finish last season.

Vettel survived just seven laps at the United States Grand Prix before retiring due to a sudden suspension failure. That marked the second time in four races that the 32-year-old German has failed to finish. However, when Vettel has finished, he has finished well of late, driving to the podium in three of his past five outings. With three career wins at Brazil, Vettel sits as an intriguing +500 wager to capture the checkered flag this weekend. And with just 19 points separating him and Leclerc on the Drivers Standings, a strong finish on Sunday is likely to give a boost to his attractive +365 odds to finish atop the standings without Mercedes.

Picks: Sebastian Vettel to win (+500); Winning car – Ferrari (+288)
