Can Truex Jr. Win Again?

Truex has already clinched his spot in the second round of the playoffs. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t be in the mix to contend for the outright win in Charlotte this weekend. After all, Truex is clearly the hottest driver in the series following back-to-back wins at Las Vegas and Richmond.

Truex also won this race in 2017 and he’s done well on road courses of late. He has an average driver finish of 8.3 since 2017, which is the fifth-best mark among active drivers. He’s the guy I’d go with among the favorites for the week.

Keep in mind that Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch have already advanced, so they are free to gun it for the win without worrying about collecting points and making the cut. Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin need to finish 30th or better to advance, so they may be more conservative.

Ryan Blaney Aiming For Top 10

Sticking with past champions, Blaney is the defending Bank of America Roval 400 race winner. He’s also in the mix of drivers that need a strong performance this week in order to remain within the playoff cutoff line. Blaney is currently 10^th in the standings with only the Top 12 drivers advance.

The other thing to like about Blaney is that he’s performed well of late. He did finish 17th last week, which is not that great, but he was fifth, seventh, 13th and 10^th in the four weeks prior. I’m looking for a top ten finish out of him this week.

Clint Bowyer For A Top 10

I’m going to take a flier on Bowyer to finish in the Top 10 as he’s been doing that quite a bit recently. He finished eighth last week and while he was 25th in Las Vegas the week before, he finished fifth, sixth and seventh in the three weeks prior. That makes four Top 10’s in his last 5.

As far as road courses go, Bowyer has a 7.9 average drive finish, which is third-best since 2017. He finished third here in September of 2018 after starting in seventh place. I’ll take a shot with him to get inside the Top 10 once more.

Avoid Erik Jones

The only way that Jones can advance to the second round of the playoffs is to win this race outright. Considering how he’s performed of late, I’m not going to be banking on him getting the job done this week.

Jones actually did finish fourth last week at Richmond but he was disqualified following a failed post-race inspection. In the two weeks before that, he placed 36th and 39th. In his only start at this road course, he finished 30th and he has an average finish of 12.7 on road courses over the last two years.

I’ll pass on him here as I think this is the end of the line for him.
