The plucky underdog story that is Moscow Liga Pro table tennis continues to defy the odds.

As soccer leagues are ramping up in Europe, and North American sports such as the NHL, NBA and MLB are laying the groundwork to get playing again, bettors continue to be drawn to Russian table tennis.

Sportsbooks are maintaining daily six-figure handles on this niche sport. Others can no longer scoff at the impact of Moscow Liga Pro action on the industry. Even some of the top handicappers in sports betting, people who’d normally be breaking down NFL and NCAA games, are turning their attention to analyzing Russian table tennis.

On the weekend, sportsbooks reported that Russian table tennis carried the #1 betting handle. It was bigger than either Sunday’s NASCAR race. Even the much-hyped The Match, the golfing exhibition featuring Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning against Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady, was an also-ran by comparison.

When they’re topping Tiger and bigger than Brady, they must be doing something right.

Odds taken May 27

Moscow Liga Pro games are won by the first player to record 11 points. However, like its cousin tennis, all table tennis matches must end with a minimum of a two-point victory by the winner. Although tennis switches service every game, in table tennis the serve changes hands every two points. Matches are the best-of-five games.

While there’s action around the clock every day, let’s take a look at the matches that are the best bets on Wednesday afternoon.

Going for the Kirill

In the yin and the yang, the yang represents brightness. In matches between Kirill Abramov and Demik Ying, Ying represents brightness to bettors laying their money down on Abramov.

Abramov has won six matches in a row from Ying. He’s 12-1 through their last 13 meetings, and 14-2 over their last 16 clashes.

It’s been mostly downhill lately for Ying. He’s lost five in a row overall. During that stretch, he’s also 0-3 when facing Abramov. Ying has one win in his last seven matches. During that stretch, he’s 0-4 when standing across the table from Abramov.

Taking all of Abramov’s recent matches into account, he’s just a middling 5-3. But four of those five wins have come at the expense of Ying.

Pick: Kirill Abramov (-300)

Frolov Frolics Against Shirokov

In general, Vladimir Shirokov isn’t playing well against anybody. He’s dropped nine of his last 12 matches.

When he faces Aleksandr Frolov, though, things get especially ugly. Frolov has won four of their last five meetings.

He’s also got the better of Shirokov in eight of their last 10 battles, nine out of 13 and 14 of the last 19.

Against all opponents, Frolov is riding a five-match winning streak. He’s 6-2 through his last eight matches.

Pick: Aleksandr Frolov (-188)

Babkin Caught in Sadkov Situation

In an all-Andrey showdown, it figures to be Andrey Sadkov’s day. He’s won six of his last eight matches and eight of the last 12 clashes with Andrey Babkin.

Sadkov is dominating many of these meetings. He’s posted 3-0 shutout wins in three of their last four matches. In fact, Sadkov has blanked Babkin seven times in their last 14 matches.

Sadkov might have Babkin’s number but things don’t always add up against other players. He’s won only four of his last eight outings.

Babkin is 3-2 in his last five matches, including a rare win over Sadkov, but just 3-5 over his last eight.

Pick: Andrey Sadkov (-250)
