Arsenal vs Brighton Preview

The run of three draws and a defeat for the Gunners handed the impetus in the EPL title race to Man City, but while many expected it to signal the end of Arsenal’s challenge, consecutive wins over Chelsea (h) and Newcastle United (a) have kept them very much in the hunt.

The title remains City’s to lose – Arsenal need them to drop at least four points – but those two wins, particularly the one at St James’ Park, have indicated that Arteta’s men are not going quietly and will do all they can to take it to the final day of the season. Crucially, their hard-earned clean sheet at Newcastle was their first in eight.

The Gunners in Must-Win Territory

With three games left, Arsenal are in must-win territory but, on paper, the visit of Brighton represents their biggest remaining challenge. While Nottingham Forest (a) and Wolves (h) both promise to be tough encounters, if they are unable to beat the Seagulls they may ultimately become dead rubbers.

So, it’s all on the line for Arteta’s men who need to overcome some shaky recent form at the Emirates, albeit against a team that itself is in the hunt for the European places. An interesting sub-plot to this game is that Arsenal’s January signing Leandro Trossard will be lining up against his old team. Could he be a key figure?

Brighton’s Quest for Europe

While things unraveled horribly for the Seagulls last weekend when they suffered a shock 5-1 home defeat at the hands of lowly Everton, it was very much a one-off in what has been an outstanding season for them. Despite losing Graham Potter to Chelsea early in the season, under new manager Roberto De Zerbi they have gone from strength to strength.

In addition to Brighton pushing for a European place next season – they are currently just two points behind sixth-placed Tottenham – they also made it to the FA Cup semifinal where they were cruelly beaten on penalties by Manchester United. Doubly impressive is the fact that Brighton have achieved all of the above by playing soccer of the highest quality.

Seagulls’ Good Record at The Emirates

The Seagulls still, however, have plenty of work to do before they can claim their place in Europe, especially as, in addition to Arsenal, they also still have to play Newcastle and Man City in their remaining five games.

On a more positive note, they head to The Emirates having scored at least once in their last 11 away games, and where they have a good record – winning on three of their last four visits there. When these two met at the Amex Stadium in late December, the Gunners won 4-2.

Arsenal vs Brighton Prediction

De Zerbi has demanded a response from his men following the home humiliation against Everton and I expect him to get one. While, in the circumstances, a win for the Seagulls looks a big ask, an improved performance could be enough for a point against the Gunners, who have found life challenging at home over the last six weeks.

Arsenal vs Brighton Picks: The draw (+320) / Trossard to score (+225)
