Bayern Munich will be feeling extremely confident as they prepare for their second leg tie with Lazio on Wednesday, March 17th, kick-off 4:00 pm EST at the Allianz Arena.

The Bundesliga giants took care of business in fine fashion on February 23rd in Rome, thrashing the Serie A outfit 4-1 in a very dominant performance. It will take a miracle for Lazio to overcome such a deficit in this match, but it’s Europe, so anything is possible.

Bayern Continue to Dominate

It’s been smooth sailing for Bayern this term, both in Europe and domestically. For once, the title race in Germany is closer than usual though, with RB Leipzig just four points behind Hansi Flick’s side in the second spot.

Munich has only lost three times in 2020/21, with all defeats coming in league play. In the Champions League, the current title-holders have looked flawless. They soared through the group stages with a 5-1-0 record and by no surprise, destroyed Lazio in the first leg of the round of 16.

In fact, Italian opponents have tasted defeat in each of their last four meetings with Bayern on the road. However, this is the first time that Die Roten is playing host to Lazio in Europe. Out of the 21 sides in this competition to face the Germans for the first time away from home soil, they’ve all gone winless.

Flick’s men are coming off a convincing victory on Saturday, beating Werder Bremen 3-1. They’ve scored a mind-boggling 74 goals in Bundesliga this term in just 25 matches while conceding 35 times. In the UCL, Bayern has bagged 22 goals in seven appearances, while allowing just six.

It’s common knowledge that Munich has been unstoppable, but on home soil in European play, Flick has guided the squad to a perfect 6-0-0 record at Allianz Arena, with an impressive goal difference of +15.

Uphill Battle for Lazio

It really hasn’t been the best year for Lazio after a terrific 2019/20 campaign where they secured a spot in this competition. Simone Inzaghi’s men are currently in seventh place in Italy and four points out of a Europa League spot. The Eagles have struggled to score and keep oppositions out of their own net, netting 42 times and conceding 37.

It was certainly a positive for them to progress out of the group stages alongside Borussia Dortmund in their pod, but it was always going to be a daunting task when you matchup with Bayern Munich. It’s not over by any means, but Lazio certainly has their backs against the wall on Wednesday.

Their form has been dreadful lately in Serie A as well. They’ve suffered three defeats in five games, including losses to Inter Milan and Juventus, which were both extremely important clashes as they desperately try to claw into the top six.

Inzaghi’s men did collect three points on Friday in a 3-2 nailbiter victory over FC Crotone after substitute Felipe Caicedo bagged the winner just eight minutes after coming on. It was not convincing though, considering their opponent in Crotone is currently rock bottom in the league.

Lazio has also won just once in their last 15 matches in the Champions League away from Stadio Olimpico, including a current run of four draws and four defeats. Keeping Bayern scoreless is the ultimate task while hoping their attack, led by Ciro Immobile, can muster up some brilliance.

Bayern Munich vs Lazio Best Bet

It would be very challenging for any side on the globe to turn around a 4-1 deficit. Lazio is also playing poorly lately and history speaks for itself. No team ever in the Champions League has come back from losing a first leg by three or more goals on home soil and advanced to the next stage.

Bayern will have no issues here, winning by two goals and marching their way into the quarterfinals. Expect Lazio to find the back of the net on Wednesday, but it won’t be enough.

Pick: Bayern Munich to Win by 2 (+325), Both Teams to Score (-148)
