Bayern Munich have begun the second half of the German football season with an ominous move into second place in the Bundesliga.

It is their highest position since late October with leaders Red Bull Leipzig four points ahead.

Bayern have the chance to keep up the pressure in their home match against fifth-placed Schalke 04 on Saturday, January 25, at Allianz Arena, Munich, 12:30 pm EST.

Oddsmakers have set Bayern as wide favorites to win at -556. Schalke are priced at +1050 with the draw at +660.

Schalke can be stubborn so the spread offer of +108 for them to lose by two goals or less could offer value against the wide moneyline odds. Alternatively, the +660 for the draw could be a worthwhile outsider.

Both teams began in winning fashion after the end of Germany’s winter break last weekend.

Big-Hitting Win Away at Hertha Berlin

Bayern racked up a 4-0 hammering of lowly Hertha Berlin with star striker Robert Lewandowski again among those on target with a 73rd-minute penalty.

It was their fourth straight Bundesliga victory.

Schalke scored a 2-0 win against high-flying Borussia Monchengladbach to get back on track after two straight draws before the winter break began. They are now unbeaten in four fixtures.

They are a much-improved side under new coach David Wagner this season and will draw level on points with Bayern if they are successful at the Allianz Arena this weekend.

Schalke have the second-best defensive record after conceding 21 times, although that is closely matched by Bayern who have let in 22 goals.

Bayern are the second-highest goalscorers in the competition with 50 goals – only one less than leaders Leipzig.

As ever this season, the key figure could be Bayern’s Polish striker Lewandowski who is enjoying an extra-ordinary campaign.

His penalty strike against Berlin last weekend took his Bundesliga tally to 20 in 18 matches.

He has also scored 10 times in five Champions League games and hit another in two appearances in the German DFB Pokal cup tournament.

Successful Groin Operation

He underwent a minor and successful groin injury operation at the beginning of the winter break but returned immediately to action last weekend.

He has now failed to hit the target in only four of his 18 Bundesliga appearances this season.

Lewandowski hit a hat-trick when Bayern won 3-0 away from home against Schalke in August.

Again by contrast, Schalke’s leading scorer in the league is German midfielder Suat Serdar who has found the target seven times.

Schalke have not beaten Bayern in a Bundesliga fixture since a 2-0 win in December, 2010.

That win against Schalke in Gelsenkirchen was Bayern’s fifth straight league success against them since September 2017. The run is six wins for Bayern including a DFB Pokal cup tie.

That represents a run of 18 league meetings without a win. In that time, Schalke have managed only three draws.

Their last victory against Bayern in any competition came in the DFB Pokal; a 1-0 success in March 2011.

Bayern have been champions in Germany in each of the last seven seasons.

Flick Replaced Coach Kovac

They underwent a change of manager earlier in the season with Hans-Dieter Flick replacing Niko Kovac on November 4 after a 5-1 thrashing by Eintracht Frankfurt.

They have since won six times and lost twice in the Bundesliga under the new coach’s command. In total, they have won 11 times in the Bundesliga with three draws and four defeats – two of them at home.

Schalke have won nine times and drawn six, with three defeats – with two of those setbacks coming on the road.
