Borussia Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund Preview

Gladbach’s defeat in Bochum on Tuesday was their third in their last three games and has led to questions being asked of head coach Daniel Farke.

The former Norwich City coach led his team to a blistering start of the season but as their form has tailed off in recent weeks, Farke’s tactics and inability to change games have caused elements of concern among Monchengladbach fans.

Gladbach in Need of a Big Win

As is typical of a Farke team, Monchengladbach have lots of the ball but the key is to make use of that possession and against Bochum, they had just two shots on goal. Clearly, not enough, especially against a team that is in the relegation zone.

This all adds up to a difficult month for Gladbach who, in addition to their downturn in league form, were also knocked out of the DFB-Pokal by SV Darmstadt, the current leaders of 2.Bundesliga.

BVB Now Six Adrift of Bayern

Dortmund, unlike Monchengladbach, still retain genuine hopes of winning another Bundesliga title but their 2-0 midweek defeat in Wolfsburg opened up a six-point gap between them and leaders, Bayern Munich.

Bayern face bottom-of-the-table Schalke at the weekend and so defeat for BVB in Monchengladbach – or even two dropped points from a draw – will likely see that gap grow ever-wider.

Disappointment in Wolfsburg

While the Wolves were always going to provide stiff opposition – they were seven games unbeaten – what made Tuesday’s defeat doubly disappointing for Edin Terzic’s team is that they created enough chances to have won the game but, as it transpired, they had no answer to Micky van de Ven’s early opener and Lukas Nmecha’s late clincher.

In addition to staying in touch with leaders Bayern, BVB must also stay in touch with the top four and the Champions League places. If their season stays on its current trajectory they are heading to the Europa League or the Europa Conference, both of which are unpalatable outcomes for a club of Dortmund’s stature

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction

Monchengladbach badly needs the win here to both reignite their season and alleviate the heat on Farke, but off the back of their own midweek defeat, BVB’s need for the win is huge.

While both sides have their injury problems ahead of this game, BVB’s squad depth is the greater, and that could be the deciding factor. With the visitors still in plus money, the value lies with a narrow away win.

Picks: Borussia Dortmund to win (+110) / Over 3.5 goals (+116)
