Bundesliga Matchday 7 Odds & Picks: Monchengladbach Looking to Stretch Unbeaten Streak to Nine Games

Matchday 7 is upon us in Germany’s top flight, with a couple of intriguing clashes highlighting the weekend. Borussia Dortmund welcomes current German and European title-holders Bayern Munich to Signal Iduna in a much-anticipated fixture featuring the two finest clubs in the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen will also host Borussia Monchengladbach, which should also be one to watch with both sides in top form.

Pick 1: Stuttgart vs Frankfurt

Both of these sides are currently in a four-way tie for seventh place with nine points each. Stuttgart enters this fixture at Mercedes-Benz Arena in decent form, going unbeaten in their last five appearances. But, they’ve collected just two wins while drawing three times.

Considering Stuttgart was just promoted at the beginning of the season, they’re doing fairly well to this point. They’ve conceded just over one goal per match and have also scored the fourth-most goals in the Bundesliga through six games. Austrian striker Sasa Kalajdzic has been leading the way for Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men, already bagging three goals and collecting two assists.

Frankfurt missed out on any European competitions this season after finishing in ninth spot last term, so they will be eager to secure a top-six finish. Early on, they are 2-3-1. Last time out, Eintracht tied Werder Bremen 1-1 after Andre Silva equalized in the 65th minute to help his side take away a point. The Portuguese youngster has been their most productive finisher in the final third, already scoring four times.

The last meeting between Stuttgart and Frankfurt in March of 2019 resulted in a 3-0 victory for Adi Hutter’s side. But, they were a much different club at the time with the likes of former players Sebastian Haller and Luka Jovic linking up for boatloads of goals. Stuttgart have held their own since the promotion and I believe they will put up a good fight here. They haven’t beat any team in German’s top flight more than their Matchday 7 counterparts, but I believe a draw will be a safe bet.

Pick 2: Wolfsburg vs Hoffenheim

Wolfsburg has yet to lose this term, but despite this, they sit in 11th place with just eight points. The Wolves have just one victory to their name, having tied their other five matches. But, Oliver Glasner’s squad will be feeling a sense of optimism heading into this clash with Hoffenheim.

They’ve lost just one of their last eight games against them and are unbeaten against Hoffenheim in their last four meetings. Defensively, this side has been phenomenal this term, conceding just four times. But, they’ve also struggled to find the back of the net, bagging just five goals in six appearances.

History is not on Hoffenheim’s side heading into this clash on the road. No other team except for Leverkusen and Bayern have beaten them more than Wolfsburg. They will be seeking their first victory against Glasner’s men since February of 2012. Hoffenheim will need to bounce back after a disappointing 3-1 loss to Union Berlin on Monday. On a positive note, Andrej Kramaric has been fantastic on the attack, already bagging six goals.

Volskwagen Arena has not been kind to Hoffenheim but after such a dismal spell of form against Wolfsburg, I think they’re going to turn it around this weekend. It will be a close match, with the visitors pulling out a one-goal victory.

Pick: Hoffenheim +230

Pick 3: Bayer Leverkusen vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Aside from the Der Klassiker, this clash should be one of the most intriguing of Matchday 7. Leverkusen have enjoyed a fine start to the campaign despite losing Kai Havertz in the summer to Chelsea. Peter Bosz’s men have yet to lose this term, going 3-3-0 which puts them in fourth place. After scoring just seven goals in all of last season, forward Lucas Alario has stepped into a more involved role for Leverkusen this term, already netting five times in as many appearances.

Monchengladbach is firing on all cylinders in Europe and Germany, looking to stretch their unbeaten streak to nine games. They handed Leipzig their first domestic defeat last weekend then followed up with a 6-0 thrashing of Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk in the group stages of the Champions League mid-week thanks to Alassane Plea’s hat-trick. During their run of impressive form, they’ve drawn the likes of Real Madrid and Inter Milan in UCL play, while also beating Mainz and FC Koln in the Bundesliga.

Although their attacking duo of Plea and Marcus Thuram has yet to make a serious impact in Germany, their performances as of late in Europe would make one think it’s only a matter of time until they start to pick apart backlines in league play.

Leverkusen got the better of Gladbach in their last meeting in May, winning 3-1. However, the visitors just finished ahead of them to secure Champions League football, as Leverkusen went into Europa instead. Given Monchengladbach’s dominance lately, I’m going to go with Marco Rose’s side here as they look to hand the hosts their first defeat of the season.
