With the 2020/21 Bundesliga season just days away, it’s time to take a glance at the possible scenarios that could play out at the bottom of the table. Dusseldorf and Paderborn were both relegated at the end of the last term to 2. Bundesliga, which paved the way for Arminia Bielefeld and Stuttgart, who were promoted to Germany’s top-flight.

In the sportsbooks, there are currently four sides who are being favored in the relegation talks. Arminia, FC Union Berlin, Mainz, and FC Augsburg.

Arminia Favorites for Relegation

This will be Arminia Bielefeld’s first season in the Bundesliga since 2008, where they had a five-year run of top-flight football. For the last 12 seasons, they’ve hovered between 3. Liga and 2. Bundesliga, winning the latter last year, which earned them a promotion for this term.

In the first round of the DFB-Pokal this past weekend, Arminia was already knocked out, losing to fourth-tier side Rot-Weiss Essen. Nonetheless, they’ll be heading into their season opener against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday with confidence from an impressive campaign last year.

Uwe Neuhaus’ squad finished in first place, scoring 65 goals and conceding just 30 in 34 matches, both league bests. Strikers Fabian Klos and Andreas Volgsammer led the way for Arminia, bagging 22 and 13 goals, respectively. The latter will be out until the end of September with a hairline fracture in his foot, but Klos will be looking to put together another fine season on the attack.

It won’t be easy by any means for this side though against quality competition on a weekly basis. It’s been a very long time since they were actually in the top division in Germany and although it’s too early to make assumptions, it will be a daunting task for them to avoid relegation.

Can Union Berlin, Mainz, or Augsburg Avoid Relegation?

Union Berlin finished in 11th place last season, steering clear of the bottom two. Regardless, they’re one of the favorites to be relegated, despite bringing in eight new players this summer. They were one of the teams who were expected to go down last term, but they proved everyone wrong, staying up for the time being. This will be just their second year in a row in the Bundesliga, after being promoted in 2019/20 for the first time in club history.

Mainz has finished around the 13th-14th place mark in each of the last three seasons in Germany’s top tier. Robin Quaison netted 13 times for his side last term, helping them stay up. However, it was a quiet summer for Achim Beierlozer’s men, failing to make any notable signings. They were only seven points shy of relegation last season and will need to improve at the back this year if they want to stay afloat in the Bundesliga.

Augsburg has been in the top-flight for numerous years now, even finishing in fifth place back in 2014/15. They did a good job of adding several new defenders in the transfer window as well, addressing an area of their squad which needed to be strengthened after conceding far too often last term.

Best Bet

Frankly, I just don’t believe Arminia will have enough to stay in the Bundesliga after one season. They’re a safe bet to finish at the bottom and be relegated. Although they enjoyed success in the second tier, it’s a whole different story in the top-flight and it’s more competitive than it was back in 2008 when Arminia last found themselves in the first division.

As for the second team to go down, I’m going with Mainz. They’ve just finished above the relegation zone in the last few seasons but after not making any signings to strengthen their squad over the summer, I think it will hurt them and they’ll find themselves in the bottom two.

Picks: To finish at the bottom: Arminia Bielefeld +175; To be Relegated: Arminia Beilefeld -118, Mainz 05 +300
