The MLS Cup Playoffs are rolling and CF Montreal vs NYCFC will decide the last Eastern Conference finalist. Philadelphia beat Cincinnati on Thursday night which means the winner of Sunday’s match will travel to Philadelphia next Sunday to fight for a spot in the MLS Cup Final.

Coincidentally, the top three sides in each conference are still alive. Respectively, Montreal and NYCFC represent the second and third seeds in the East, finishing the season on 65 and 55 points.

Going back to the last round, both of these sides had impressive clean-sheet victories. Firstly, 60% possession and two second-half goals were good enough for Montreal to dispatch Orlando City. Likewise, NYCFC scored three goals in the last thirty minutes to break the hearts of Inter Miami.

Overall, the favorites for this Eastern Conference semifinal are CF Montreal with moneyline odds of +104. Conversely, NYCFC have much longer odds, sitting at +260. Note, these odds are regular time plays, not for who will advance after any needed extra time or spot kicks.

CF Montreal vs NYCFC Over/Under
Furthermore, goals are to be expected in this match as the over on 2.5 total goals sits at -130. This is a moderately safe play considering this bet hit in 60% of their 70 combined MLS matches this year. However, playoff matches can be a bit a tense; teams are feeling each other out and sometimes the goals take a while to come.

Also, despite allowing fifty goals this season, Montreal have held three clean sheets in their last four matches. For that reason, I would hold off on an over/under play.

“No” on Both Teams to Score Odds

Moreover, my next suggested play sort of goes hand in hand with the notion that this game will be played on a fine margin. I do not think both teams will score in this match, which has valuable odds of +115. This hit in their last head-to-head fixture, a match that ended with goose eggs at 0-0.

Montreal frustrated NYCFC on the night, only allowing them 0.1 expected goals. I think we could be in for something similar on Sunday at the Saputo Stadium.

CF Montreal vs NYCFC Prediction

In all honesty, I have Montreal advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals, for a variety of reasons.

To start, NYCFC absolutely picked Montreal out in their first matchup of the season. In truth, the 4-1 scoreline was unfair and it took place during a dismal start to the campaign for Montreal. Their aforementioned second meeting in late July is a much more telling display as to how this side has matured throughout the year.

Actually, Montreal have suffered only one defeat over their last sixteen matches. All in all, it is a testament to their improved defensive performances. Their offense is heating up too with players like Djordje Mihailovic accumulating four goal contributions in just the last two games.

Conversely, NYCFC are sort of the opposite. The Pigeons had a terrific middle of the campaign, which was capped off by a horrific run in August and September, in which they only won one match from ten. Since, they have won four on the bounce. This all tracks back to the loss of Valentin Castellanos, the former MLS Golden Boot winner, as he went on loan to Girona in the summer. Nonetheless, recent wins against a dead Atlanta side and an underwhelming Miami are not that impressive.

Montreal is a test, and one in which NYCFC will fail.

Pick: Montreal Moneyline (+104)
