Prior to their leg one match against Atléti, Juventus was coming off back-to-back 3-0 wins in Serie A play. They looked to have rebounded from a disappointing 3-0 loss in the Coppa Italia to Atalanta and had built up some positive vibes heading to Spain.

While Juve held the ball for large portions of the game, they rarely looked to pose much of a threat for Atlético through any serious attacks.

At the end of the day the 2-0 victory for Atléti was actually flattering to Juventus, who in truth are lucky to still have a chance of advancing from the round.

While the game was scoreless until defenders José Giménez and Diego Godín scored at 78′ and 83′ to give the Spanish side the lead, the score could have, and likely should have, been much worse.

Consider that an Atléti penalty was overturned by VAR and that Diego Costa missed a breakaway. In addition, Antoine Griezmann hit the crossbar and Álvaro Morata also had a goal called back through VAR. If anything, Madrid could be equally upset that they failed to completely put down the Italian giants.

Juventus will surely need more from Ronaldo, who has struggled in the Champions League thus far with only one goal and two assists.

However, historically the Portuguese star has found success when playing against Atléti. During his Real Madrid days, he scored 21 goals in 30 games against them.

Can Juve Use Home Field to Their Advantage?

Even with Serie A already in the bag, Juventus fielded a strong line up on Sunday against second place Napoli. With Napoli keeper Alex Meret shown a red card in the 25′ minute and the subsequent free kick by Miralem Pjanić resulting in a goal, Juve looked to be well in control of the match taking a 2-0 lead to the half.

However, they took a red card of their own early in the second half and allowed Napoli to pull a goal back in the 61′ minute. If not for a missed penalty by Lorenzo Insigne in the 84′ they could’ve left with a tie or worse.

While Juve’s road record has been incredible of late in Serie A, across all competitions on home soil they’ve won 32 of their past 40 games, while only losing three times. Unfortunately that home form has not been quite as strong in Champions League play, having won just two of six recent matches.

Juventus have won just two of six recent home UCL matches.

Juve also defeated Bologna 1-0 after playing Atléti and will host Udinese on Friday before their rematch with the Spanish side.

Atlético Strong in All Competitions

Madrid have not only positioned themselves well to advance into the Champions League quarter-finals, but are also having success domestically in Spain. Atléti sit second in La Liga on 53 points, only behind Barcelona who have 60. They’re also five ahead of their Madrid rivals Real who occupy third.

Since their 2-0 victory over Juve, they’ve followed that up with two more wins by an identical score in La Liga. First came at home to Villarreal, before defeating Real Sociedad on the road. The win was highlighted by a brace from newcomer Álvaro Morata.

Overall, Atlético hasn’t conceded a goal in their past four games. On Saturday they will host 11th place side Leganés, prior to their leg two match on Tuesday.

While they’re currently in fine form, Atléti have been prone to struggles on the road in Champions League play. In their six group stage games, their three road matches saw them go 1-1-1.

On their travels they managed to beat Monaco, who’s been wallowing in the depths of Ligue 1, while suffering a defeat to superior competition in Borussia Dortmund by a 4-0 margin.

Even against Belgian side Club Brugge, they could only manage a scoreless draw.

Best Value Leg 2 Bet

There’s minimal recent history between these two sides prior to their leg one match. Their last Champions League encounter came in 2014-15. There, Atléti also won at home 1-0, while drawing 0-0 in Italy.

There’s little to suggest Juventus can overturn this deficit. Against Atlético they will be forced to push forward. However, Atléti is built to sit back, soak up the pressure and attack on the counter. It’s what Diego Simeone lives for and if leg one was any indication, the scoring chances should come.
