Neck and Neck for the Liga MX Title

With only three games left in the Clausura title race, Club América and Cruz Azul are first and second – separated by just two points. The Clásico Joven rivals have pulled clear of third-placed Monterrey and one of them will win the title in the next few weeks.

As things stand, Cruz is in pole position and a win later will open up a five-point gap with two games remaining; a lead that will be virtually unassailable. If they get it over the line, it will be La Máquina’s first league title since 1997 and has been set up by them winning their last 11 games on the bounce.

Cruz in Fine Form

It is not just Cruz’s domestic form that has been off the scale. In midweek, Juan Reynoso’s side thrashed Haitian side Arcahaie 8-0 in the CONCACAF Champions League to earn a quarterfinal tie against Toronto FC. Club America, by contrast, had a miserable midweek in the same competition, when they suffered a shock 1-0 by Honduran side Olimpia, but Santiago Solari’s team were still able to limp through to the quarterfinals on away goals, where they will meet the MLS’s Portland.

These two have been rivals for many years, and in their 50 meetings, Club America holds the upper hand with 22 wins, while Cruz Azul has won 11 times, but their most recent meeting, in the Apertura (the first part of the Mexican domestic season), ended goalless.

America Have the Experience, Cruz the Better Defense

In terms of team news, Club America will be without Jesus Lopez who fractured his fibula in the Olimpia game, and will also be without Chilean international Nicolas Castillo who is still recovering from the effects of a dangerous blood clot diagnosed back in January.

Cruz head into this game minus the services of Bryan Angulo, who misses out due to a ligament injury, but is the only notable name missing from Juan Reynoso’s squad, who himself is suspended from the dugout after getting sent off in their last league game, against Guadalajara, after an altercation with a match official.

Both clubs have won league titles and so have been in this position before, but in terms of the recent handling of the pressure of a title-chasing run-in, this is something more familiar to the current America squad, whose most recent title – they have won a record-breaking 13 – was in 2018. Cruz has eight titles to its name but their last win was back in 1997, so the current squad has little experience of a nerve-shredding run-in.

Club América vs Cruz Azul Best Bets

So, with everything on the line, it boils down to this – a straight shoot-out between the two best teams in Mexico. If Cruz wins, there looks no way back for America, but the home win throws it wide open with two to play. It comes down to the experience and know-how of America versus the verve and vigor of Cruz and their better defense.

For me, the need for America to get something out of this game could well be decisive and home advantage too may tilt the balance in their favor. An ideal scenario for the home team would be an early goal, and the midweek slip-up for America could be the wake-up call needed. On that basis, I can see them edging this by the odd goal.

Pick: Club América to win (+146)
