Dramatic Wins in Semifinals

The teams reached the sell-out showdown – one of the biggest dates in the English game’s calendar – by finishing among the four playoff places in the championship regular season.

These are directly beneath the top two spots, which won automatic promotion to the Premier League for Norwich City and Sheffield United.

Aston Villa claimed fifth place. Derby, managed by former Chelsea and England superstar Frank Lampard, were sixth.

Villa then won a two-legged semifinal against their neighbouring rivals in the English Midlands, West Bromwich Albion.

They won the first leg at home 2-1 with WBA winning the return game 1-0 after extra time. The penalty shootout was then won 4-3 by Villa, who are managed by boyhood supporter Dean Smith.

Derby’s progress to Monday’s final was also dramatic. After losing 1-0 at home against Leeds United in the first leg, they triumphed 4-2 in the second game at Elland Road in Yorkshire. Substitute Jack Marriott scored the decisive goal in added time at the end – his second goal of the night.

Villa’s assistant-manager is Lampard’s former Chelsea and England teammate John Terry.

Villa were beaten by Fulham in last season’s Championship Playoff final. Their assistant-manager is Lampard’s former Chelsea and England teammate John Terry.

Derby were well-beaten twice by Villa in the regular season. They won 3-0 at Derby last November and then 4-0 at Villa Park in March.
