  • EPL season starts in less than a month
  • Mo Salah again leads the way in race for Golden Boot
  • Books are offering some goalscorer head-to-head prop bets

With the start of the new English Premier League season less than a month away, the books are open for the Golden Boot winner. Sportsbooks are also offering some goalscorer head-to-heads and we’ll take a look at three of the most interesting match-ups.

Mohamed Salah vs Sergio Aguero Most Goals Odds

Player Odds
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) -134
Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) +101

*All odds taken 07/09/19.

The bookies are expecting the EPL title to boil down to another battle between Liverpool and Man City, and so Mohamed Salah vs Sergio Aguero could end up being pivotal. Salah is again favored to win the Golden Boot and so is also expected to beat Aguero in this head-to-head. But this is less clearcut than it first appears.

Both players have had busy summers, with Salah’s Egypt having only just been knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations, while Aguero’s Argentina side were knocked out of the Copa America by Brazil on the weekend. Neither will join up with their respective clubs until they have had some time off, so it’s conceivable that neither will start the EPL season in game one.

This follows on from last summer when both had prolonged breaks after the World Cup, but unlike Salah, Aguero was able to hit the ground running when he did re-appear. A repeat this summer would give Aguero a head start.

Also, despite Salah winning last season’s Golden Boot (he was in a three-way tie with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and teammate Sadio Mane), he scored ten less goals in 2018/19 than he did the previous season. Aguero’s consistency could see him win this one.

Our pick: Aguero  +101

Jamie Vardy vs Raheem Sterling Most Goals Odds

Player Odds
Jamie Vardy (Leicester City) +149
Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) -202

The Man City factor gives Sterling the edge here, but in terms of being a natural goalscorer there’s only one winner. Vardy scored 24 times in Leicester’s title-winning season of 2016 and, despite the Foxes failing to hit those same heights since, he has continually been among the league’s leading scorers.

Add in the fact that Brendan Rodgers has strengthened his squad considerably over the summer, giving Leicester a genuine shot at top six, and Vardy will be at the heart of this charge. With the EPL’s top player for assists, James Maddison, prompting and probing in the Foxes’ midfield, there will be a plentiful supply of chances for Vardy and so not only do we expect him to beat Sterling, we also expect him to be in the race for the Golden Boot.

Vardy scored 24 times in Leicester’s title-winning season of 2016 and, despite the Foxes failing to hit those same heights since, has continually been among the EPL’s leading scorers

For his part, Sterling will again play his part in a City side the will entertain, thrill and win in equal measure, but his lack of composure in front of goal and lack of instinct will see Vardy pip him in this battle.

Our pick: Vardy +149

Harry Kane vs Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Most Goals Odds

Player Odds
Harry Kane (Tottenham) -183
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal) +136

The battle of north London has heated up in recent seasons. At the height of the Arsene Wenger era, Arsenal reigned supreme, but Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham are a different proposition and have finished above the Gunners for the last three seasons. The balance of power has shifted, with the goals of Harry Kane’s being key to the Spurs’ renaissance.

Kane, however, was plagued by injury last season – after a World Cup in which he won the Golden Boot – and his fractured season saw Aubameyang usurp him in the goalscoring stakes and, in the process, tie with Salah and Mane in the race for the EPL Golden Boot.

Whether the Gabonese international can beat Kane if the England skipper plays a full season is difficult to say but if he stays at Arsenal – at the time of writing his future is a little uncertain – then, alongside Alexandre Lacazette, the Arsenal forward line promises to again be very productive.

This one will be close, but we anticipate a fully fit Harry Kane will just edge it.

Our pick: Kane -183
