Germany vs Hungary meets in round 3 of Group F on Wednesday, June 21 at 3:00 pm EST in Munich.

Both teams still have the opportunity to make it to the knockout phase of the tournament but for the Hungarians, who have collected just a single point so far, this match is a must-win. For the Germans, a point should be enough to them through.

Germany Ease Past Ronaldo’s Portugal

With both teams losing their opening game but picking up points in their second, the stakes are high and both camps are in a confident mood ahead of their meeting in the Allianz Arena. Unfortunately for the visitors, the home advantage they enjoyed in those opening two games, in the form of a noisy, passionate Budapest crowd, has gone, and instead it is the Germans who will have a loud, partizan support behind them.

The Germans have given themselves a great chance of qualification, thanks to their superb win over Portugal at the weekend; a game in which they went behind early on when Cristiano Ronaldo scored for Portugal. At that point, the Germans were staring into the Euro abyss in the so-called ‘Group of Death’, but rallied superbly well to eventually win 4-1.

A Draw Probably Enough for the Germans

The Portugal performance was a throwback to the Germans’ glory days when their high-tempo soccer simply overwhelmed opponents, and certainly, Portugal had no answer to their marauding wing-backs, Joshua Kimmich and Robin Gosens, who were at the center of everything. A similar performance from those two on Wednesday and it could be a very long night for the Hungarians.

As a result of that win, Germany knows a win will definitely secure them a place in the next phase, and even a draw will likely be enough, especially if France avoids defeat against Portugal on the same night. Equally, the Germans could yet top the group if they beat Hungary and Portugal beat the French.

Either way, the Germans’ record of making it to the latter stages of this tournament is excellent, having been beaten finalists in 2008 and semifinalists in 2012 and 2016, and they again will be confident of making it to the last four at least.

Hungary Heroics Against the French

Hungary’s opener against Portugal was a disappointment – they lost 3-1-  but manager Marco Rossi rallied his troops for the second game where they impressively held world champions France to a 1-1 draw. Few expected the Hungarians to make it out of this group, but that result against Didier Deschamps’ men will have given them a massive boost of confidence and they head to Munich believing the impossible is possible.

There is still plenty of work to be done, however, and even if they were to beat Germany and Portugal were to beat France, second place would then be decided on goal difference. Also, Rossi’s men will still only finish third if they win this game and the other match, back in Budapest, is drawn. All the Hungarians can realistically do is try and win this and then hope the gods are on their side.

For the Magyars’, this is their second consecutive appearance in these finals, although it is worth noting that France 2016 was their first Euro finals tournament since 1972, and their only major tournament since theWorld Cup in 1986. Interestingly, this will be the first time these two nations have met in a competitive match since the 1954 World Cup final; a game that was won 3-2 by the then West Germany.

Germany vs Hungary Best Bet

As much as I would like to believe the Hungarians have what it takes to make this one a thriller, the home advantage they enjoyed in Budapest for their two opening games has now shifted to the Germans, who also have the added advantage of being player-for-player better than the Magyars. The Hungarians will not lack in hunger and desire, but they may lack quality when faced with such high-level, in-form opponents.

So, for that reason, I see the Germany win as easy money, and would even go as far as to say it could be a win by as much as a three-goal margin.

Pick: Germany to win 3-0 (+600)
