Girona Edge the First Leg
These two teams finished fifth and sixth in La Liga Segunda in the regular season but are both now just 90 minutes away from reaching the top flight of Spanish soccer – in Girona’s case for only their third season ever. And it is the home side who take a slender one-goal lead into this second-leg after winning the first, away in Madrid, 2-1.

Last Sunday’s game at Estadio de Vallecas could not have gone much better for Girona but it started badly when they found themselves 1-0 inside six minutes after Isi Palazon grabbed an opener for the hosts. The visitors responded well though and goals on either side of halftime from Enric Franquesa and Mamadou Sylla turned it around and gave them that invaluable one-goal lead.

Thrilling End to the Campaign for Girona
For Sunday’s hosts, this is their second consecutive appearance in the Segunda Playoff final after narrowly missing out last season when they lost 1-0 to Elche over the two legs. They will be hoping to learn from the experience and use it to their advantage in Sunday’s second leg.
Girona made it through thanks to an emphatic 3-0 two-legged semifinal win over Almeria but, in fact, only made it into the top six of the Segunda after a thrilling end to their regular season in which they won seven games out of their last eight. Rayo Vallecano Still in the Hunt
Vallecano has enjoyed more seasons in La Liga than Girona (18) but – as mentioned above – were relegated with Sunday’s opponents at the end of the 2018-19 season when they collected just 32 points. They have regrouped well since that disappointing campaign though and their 67-point haul this time around was enough to earn them sixth-place and a playoff semifinal against third-placed Leganes.

They went on to make light work of their semifinal, beating Leganes 5-1 over the two legs, but the shock 2-1 defeat last Sunday has left them with work to do if they are to regain their place in the top flight.

Girona vs Rayo Vallecano Best Bet
The fact that both teams enjoyed those 2-1 away wins in this fixture this season will give hope to Vallecano, but Girona’s home record is a good one. It really could not be balanced any finer and it looks likely to be one of those games that will be decided by a piece of brilliance or a mistake.
It will also come down to who can hold their nerve in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of a playoff final, and it is for that reason I have an inkling that Vallecano’s extra experience may come to the fore. It could take extra time to separate them though, and I would definitely fancy a Rayo win if it goes to 120 minutes, but I predict a one-goal win for the visitors in the 90 minutes.
